Japan Society Film ProgramThe Japan Society Film Program has offered a diverse selection of Japanese films, from classics to contemporary independent productions. The Program has included retrospectives of seminal directors, thematic series and special screenings of international, U.S. and NY premieres. Several original film series curated by Japan Society have traveled to other U.S. venues in tours organized by the Film Program. The Film Program has provided English subtitles for films which have never been screened outside of Japan. Accompanying lectures help place the films in their aesthetic and social contexts, and filmmakers often introduce and discuss their work.JAPAN CUTS, the Film Program's yearly film festival, offers a diverse selection of the most notable recent films from Japan, giving New Yorkers a first look at blockbusters and cinematic landmarks from cutting-edge independents to highly innovative animations. In its third year, JAPAN CUTS is the only large-scale annual Japanese film festival in North America that brings a sizable slice of Japan's contemporary film scene to New York City. The program is replete with exclusive Q&As with filmmakers, special events and more. ![]() The Japan Society FilmJapan Society of New York was one of the pioneers of cultural exchange in the early 20th century. Begun in a time when few Americans knew anything about Japan, it quickly reached a wider audience than the few learned societies that focused on Asia at the time. Japan Society not only hosted leading Japanese visitors to the United States, it sponsored the first important exhibitions of Japanese art, published important books on Japan written by American experts, and promoted the study of Japan in American schools and universities by distributing learning materials and providing funds for prizes at the collegiate level. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, it became the leading forum for Japanese to encounter their American counterparts abroad.
This season, Japan Society honors Donald Richie (April 17, 1924–February 19, 2013), whose work contributed incomparably toward making Japanese art and culture visible throughout the world—especially through film. A Tribute to Donald Richie begins as a monthly series featuring five Japanese directors who became known throughout the world thanks to Richie’s introduction. A second thematic series (Globus Film Series) honoring Richie follows in spring 2014. Both are curated by film scholar and former Japan Society Film Program Director Kyoko Hirano.
