Documentary Edge Festival is Australasia's premiere international documentary festival held annually in Auckland and Wellington around April - June. The Festival showcases the very best in documentary films from New Zealand and around the world. It also includes a Gala Awards, Q & A Sessions with filmmakers, various social functions and special events.

Documentary Edge Festival is a contemporary cutting edge festival that seeks to bring documentaries that:

  • Are thought provoking and challenge the audiences.
  • Provide a valuable insight into the topics and issues that confront our society.
  • Build bridges of understanding.
  • Ensure that the works of emerging, independent and low budget films continue to be celebrated.

Documentary Edge Festival embraces the latest trends in documentary filmmaking and seeks to expose New Zealand audiences to these developments.

The 2013 Documentary Edge Festival programme showcased the following sections: World Cinema, Culture Vultures, Human Rights, The American Dream, Generation Next, Game On, Sign of the Times, and special presentations.

The 2014 Documentary Edge Festival will be held at Q Theatre in Auckland 22 May - 1 June. The dates in Wellington TBA.

Documentary Edge Festival (DEF) is Australasia's premiere international competitive documentary film festival and the only dedicated annual international documentary film festival held in New Zealand. DEF runs in Auckland and Wellington and includes a Gala Awards, Q & A sessions with filmmakers, special events and more. The 9th DEF will be held in Auckland 22 May - 1 June 2014 and in Wellington June 2014 (dates TBA).

Documentary Edge Festival prefers online entries submitted via Withoutabox.com  or FilmFestivalLife.com.  Both websites provide cost-saving, paperless submission to film festivals around the world.
