> CHILE: 1973–2013
Before the 1973 September coup, Chile had a dream of Popular Unity. Cinema was one of its tools and helped reveal its aspirations. Forty years later, Cinéma du réel presents a retrospective of Chilean documentary cinema before, during and after Allende’s government. The films screened include works by Patricio Guzman, Pedro Chaskel, Carlos Flores, Ignacio Agüero...

Cinéma du réel revisits the work of the Indian documentarist Anand Patwardhan, whose politically engaged films explore a range of social and political issues.
In the presence of the filmmaker, who will be leading a master class.

On the occasion of the French release of his final film Age is…, an intimate portrait of this Anglo-American director and leading figure of experimental cinema, who passed away last June, based on the memories of his colleagues, close friends and relatives. This tribute will also present a premiere of his installation, Dream House, and a special concert by Alexander Bălănescu.

Cinéma du réel will host two screenings presented by Bernard Eisenschitz, in connection with the discussion “Art and crisis: from the New Deal to nowadays” organised by the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Public information library) at the Centre Pompidou on March 11, 2013.

A programme of contemporary films that question a country’s utopias and imaginary identities using an artistic approach.

> ARRESTED CINEMA
After its 2012 focus on Syria, Cinéma du réel is dedicating this section to Iran and the situation of Iranian filmmakers on the eve of the June 2013 presidential election: with the participation of the Iranian director, Mehran Tamadon.

At a time when there seems to be little alternative to digital cinema, an exploration of the artistic choices and practices of contemporary directors who continue to work with celluloid.

Since 1978, the Cinéma du Réel international documentary film festival has been an outstanding international meeting point, where the public and professionals discover the films of experienced authors as well as new talents, the history of documentary cinema as well as contemporary works. The festival programs some two hundred films for its various sections, screened at the Centre Pompidou, the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles, the MK2 Beaubourg film theatre and several other theatres in the Ile-de- France area.
