CANNES, France — A French director's clever silent movie about a
fallen Hollywood silent-movie star came out of nowhere on Sunday to
become a strong contender for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
"The
Artist" by Michel Hazanavicius won strong applause -- and more than a
few laughs -- from festival goers who'd been wondering if Cannes this
year was ever going to be about more than dysfunctional families and
sexual deviancy.

Solex Ahoy
The Sound Map of the Netherlands
During the course of the summer of 2008, Bart van Poppel and Elisabeth Esselink trekked the numerous rivers, lakes and waterways covering the twelve provinces of the Netherlands by an old motor boat. In each province a different cast of musicians were invited to climb aboard and purely a l'improviste, create a homage to the Dutch landscape. On returning to her home base in Amsterdam, Esselink took the resulting material full of noises, moods, voices and rhythms back to her studio where she set about processing the recordings into twelve separate sound-image compositions, one for each province. Solex Ahoy, or better still, The Sound Map of the Netherlands is a reflection of the perilous route. A homage to the Dutch waterways.

What do Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon and The Sundance Film Festival have in common? The World Famous HarryO’s!
It’s Thursday, the opening day of the Sundance Film Festival. Main Street is a breeze to drive down and the public parking lots are free - as opposed to the harsh $20 they’ll charge starting Friday. Now I know why a local store clerk at the nearby outlet mall told my friend everyone in Park City hates us festival folk. At $20 for parking, I’d be bitter too.

controversy due to his copyright-bending art and wild live shows. With a

artist who calls attention to the possibilities of the Internet in
enhancing creativity via mash-up style music videos – which are in turn
often put together from existing content.

Today, September 1, 2010, marks the opening of the Venice Film Festival 2010. Let me take you back to a film that won the Golden Lion sixteen years ago. I'll never forget the first time I saw the Macedonian film Before the Rain (1994), which was winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1994. Well, I have always believed that the soundtrack makes the film, like frosting makes the cake. One just cannot go without the other. And the melodious music from Before the Rain, that alway...

While Russell Crowe is doing a gory, high-minded version of ROBIN HOOD for Ridley Scott's May release, wife Danielle Spencer is "Calling All Magicians." And it seems to be just a matter of time before she turns her hand to movie music. You heard it first here. The Aussie-born singer/song writer/actress, who met Crowe on the set of early career film THE CROSSING (1990), has put out a second album that has a few woodsy quirks of its own:“I knew that I wanted to make this sound different to my (de...
