This is an overview of my 2011 Sundance experience
For Europeans, heading to a remote mining town now ski resort and festival headquarters in Park City, Utah, tucked away in the Wasatch mountains outside of Salt Lake City, it's no simple journey. It entails careful planning several months in advance, serious budgetary calculation to secure a bed in those expensive shared- condos, and blocking extra time to your return schedule as flipping time zones wrecks havoc with your metabolism a...
Director: Martín Seeger.
Piotr Herroll’s family had to leave Nacrovia and now lives in exile in Santiago de Chile. Young Piotr is sent to find work. A friend points him out that the Chilean State supports artists; so, he comes up with a play about the story of his unknown country. This carries several problems: he must have Chilean actors, who are less concerned about the meaning of his work. Also, his citizenship credentials are not very reliable. And the language barrier will result in a series of mix ups that will end altering the play. The film is spoken in a made up language, Nacrovese. The continuing use of subtitles is incorporated into the plot games, making Piotr Herroll a unpredictable hero and turning the film into a sharp comedy about the essence of the Chilean self.
A surprisingly large number of films in the programme of the 41st Berlinale Forum revolve around family, relationships and identity. Although exploring the human psyche is the number one subject for independent filmmakers from the whole world, the majority of these films in this year's selection can also be read politically within the context of social change and political upheaval. In this way, artist Kelvin K. Park's documentary Cheonggyecheon Medley places the threatened demolition of a tr...

The 41st Forum: Cracks in the Facade A surprisingly large number of films in the programme of the 41st Berlinale Forum revolve around family, relationships and identity. The Berlinale Shorts is celebrating its birthday. In the section’s fifth year, the films being presented are elegant and eloquent in both form and content. They consistently and subversively question, evade, vary and expand the many possible paths open to cinema. The films leave new marks in the cinematic landscape, and show that there are no boundaries that cannot be overcome, and no formal rules that cannot be breached. For it is in breaching them that the offer for discourse arises. The fil...

Kerala, in the southwest corner of India, is a truly magical place that contains majestic mountains, lush backwaters, golden rice paddies, towering coconut palms and a gorgeous coastline in what is India’s most cine-literate and culturally discerning state. Therefore, the yearly International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), which is currently running in the city of Trivandrum through December 19, is a much anticipated film event that brings together filmmakers and appreciative...

Arriving at any festival on the 13th of the month does not augur well, though my journey from home to Heathrow Terminal 4 had been surprisingly smooth, if long before Dawn's dusky fingers had opened the strike-free ticket offices of any of the Underground stations circling London's Regent Park. Both my Air France flights, via Paris to Frankfurt, had departed and landed on time (though we should draw a veil over the Economy Class croissants of uncertain age and provenance on the earlier flight)an...
