'MARACANÁ': The Football Legend' (2014) by Sebastián Bednarik

MARACANAZO: THE FOOTBALL LEGEND (MARACANÁ)

They say that in Brazil the second most important thing to breathing is futebol (aka 'soccer'). 2014 sees the World Cup of soccer hosted in Brazil for the first time since 1950. It is easy to see by the contagious passion that all 32 competing teams display as they vie to the death in hopes of winning the cup, and the grand scale of work the Brazilians have put into pulling off a successful FIFA competition, just how important this sport is to Brazil and to the world. The Uruguayan/Brazilian documentary 'MARACANÁ': The Football Legend' shows us a piece of history about this long beloved and ancient game, which tells the story of the 1950's World Cup in Brazil and the unforgettable defeat of Brazil to Uruguay.

For the World Cup competition hosted in Brazil in 1950, Rio's first Maracana stadium was constructed to make a statement; to be the world's biggest 'futebol' stadium' hosting 200,000+ people. While Brazil had planned an easy win on their own soil, they lost the passionately coveted cup to their neighboring nation, Uruguay. 'Maracana' tells the story of 1950's Uruguay and Brazil using old archive footage documenting the long history of this sport and its global importance as a peaceful war for world domination in soccer. What a timely and crucial history this film covers, as we presently watch another World Cup hosted in Brazil for the first time in 64 years and a brand new massive Maracana stadium to rival the former. The world wonders: which nation will take the Brazil hosted cup home this time?
