Uranium Film Festival

The International Uranium Film Festival is dedicated to all films (movies, documentaries, animated films, image films, art, fiction and non-fiction) about any nuclear issue: uranium mining, nuclear power plants, nuclear accidents, atomic bombs, nuclear waste, radioactive risks: From Hiroshima to Fukushima. It is an annual and global film festival with travelling festivals in other countries and cities.

The best and most important films of the year receive the festival Award or a Special Recognition. The Uranium Film Festival Award is a piece of art created by Brazilian waste-material-artist Getúlio Damado, who lives and works in the famous artist quarter Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. Getúlio uses waste material that he finds in the streets of Santa Teresa and old, broken watches to remember the first atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. Watches in Hiroshima stopped exactly at 8:15 in the morning when the A-bomb exploded on August 6th, 1945.

Remembering the worst radioactive accidents in cinema

INTERNATIONAL URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL - THE ATOMIC AGE CINEMA FEST IN BERLIN - OCTOBER 11 - 15, 2017

Victims of radioactive contamination are the main theme of the International Uranium Film
Festival 2017. „We want to remember especially Brazils worst but forgotten radioactive accident
that happened exactly 30 years ago in September 1987“, says Uranium Film Festival director
Norbert G. Suchanek. Two young scavengers found a radiation therapy device in an abandoned
cancer treatment Hospital in the city of Goiânia, capitol of the Brazilian state of Goiás. They sold
it to a scrap metal dealer who opened it. He did not know that it contained highly radioactive,
deadly Cesium-137 crystals and unwillingly contaminated his family, friends and hundreds of
others.

The International Uranium Film Festivals has reached its 7th year. Since its start in 2011 in Rio de
Janeiro the Uranium Film Festival became today the world's most well-known film festival about
nuclear power, the „Atomic Cannes". In the past years the festival already traveled to three
continents, seven countries and about 30 cities from Rio to New York, Hollywood and New Delhi.
The 7th International Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro is scheduled for May/June 2017 in
the Cinematheque of the Modern Art Museum. And from October 11th to 15th the Uranium
Film Festival will happen this year for the sixth time in Berlin. Venues are the Cinestar film theatre
in the KulturBrauerei and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium.

Victims of radioactive contamination and nuclear accidents are the focus of the Uranium Film
Festival 2017 circuit. It will remember especially the Brazilian „Chernobyl“, an accident with
radioactive Cesium-137 that happened 30 years ago in September 1987 in Goiânia.
