Thessaloniki International Film Festival

Dailies from the Thessaloniki international Film Festival

The 61st Thessaloniki International Film Festival was concluded with great success, receiving the audience’s love in every possible way. More than 80,000 viewers and movie industry professionals watched the films and attended the Festival’s online events, whereas a large number films of were sold out. Agora, the Festival’s development branch, also achieved a great attendance, offering support to Greek cinema through a series of new initiatives, actions, and awards.

The 61st Festival hosted a series of exhibitions and visual art events, within the framework of TIFF’s main concept, “Intimacy: a modern tyranny”. Works of art, video mapping, as well as The Glasshouse Project installation adorned the city streets and squares, as well as the Port of Thessaloniki, offering glimpses of joy and hope to the city’s residents, who had the chance to enjoy a touch of art during their scarce walks for exercise, groceries and the covering of basic needs, amidst these hard days we’re experiencing. The goal is for these exhibitions to remain in the city’s public space even after the Festival.

The Curtain Dropped on the 54th TIFF in Thessaloniki

The 54th edition of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival will come to a close on Saturday, 9 November 2013, with the closing ceremony that will take place at Olympion, the Festival's historic seat. Actress Stefania Goulioti will take on the role of presenter.

The closing ceremony and award presentation will be followed by the screening of Nebraska, directed by American filmmaker of Greek descent Alexander Payne, who is the president of the international jury in this year's Festival. Mr Payne will attend the ceremony.

The black and white film - a tribute to Mr Payne's home state of Nebraska - is a tender road movie that focuses on the bittersweet relationship between a father and a son who drive together to Nebraska to claim the prize money of a dubious lottery. Bruce Dern stars in the role of the father, giving an excellent performance that was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. The film conveys images from a little known America, recollections and truths presented through the touching personal journey of the protagonist.

The closing film, which is part of the TIFF Open Horizons/Special Screenings section, is one of  the TIFF actions financed by the European Union - Regional Development Fund for Central Macedonia, 2007-2013.
