Microphone - International Competition in 51st TIFF (Thessaloniki Film Festival)

Egypt's exemplary avant-garde director Ahmad Abdalla's new film Micriphone (2010) runs in International Competition this year at the 51st Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Almost the same bunch of independent film makers and fighters against the local commercial loud scene...creators of "Heliopolis" (2009) made "Microphone" (2010) which is touring festivals worldwide this year. This week, at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Only one week after printing their first 35mm print, these proud filmmakers premiered at Toronto Film Festival tiff10 and now are in running for International Competition at the 51st Thessaloniki Film Festival.

"Microphone" is a movie about the underground artists in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Egypt. In the tradition of their groundbreaking and award winning film (and one of my personal favorites of 2009) Heliopolis, Microphone is a film about multiple characters struggling to advance as a culture in an ancient world that is slow to change holding fast to tradition. It is a film about striving to get somewhere while getting nowhere and yet, being all the better for the journey in between. Microphone explores contemporary Alexandria and its underground music and art culture, offering us a view into an Alexandria never before experienced by the outside world.
