Tim Sutton's Haunting Prelude to an American Massacre 

Set amidst a seemingly limitless expanse of sprawl that could be anywhere in the United States, Dark Night is a portrait of 21st-century Americans under deep emotional and financial duress. A veteran. An outcast. A social-media addict. An immigrant.  All living lives of quiet desperation, but all about to intersect in that supremely popular venue of American escapism: the movie theater. 

Tim Sutton, the writer/director of Memphis (2014 Sundance Film Festival), has fashioned a poetic retelling of an all-too-common American tragedy by focusing his gaze not only on the specifics of one shooter's state of mind, but on the larger cultural malaise from which such individuals spring. Sutton's careful eye brings a shock of aestheticism that places the viewer directly within the depicted worlds. With its lyrical images, evocative sound design, and mournful soundtrack, Dark Night is a quiet portrait of modern phenomenon that is distinctly American.
