Alvaro Brechner: I like films that surprise me

Alvaro Brechner: Alvaro BrechnerAlvaro Brechner: Alvaro BrechnerAlvaro Brechner was born in Montevideo in 1976. 12 years ago he leaves
Uruguay and moves to Madrid where he starts working as a director. He
has directed a number of short and documentary films and in 2009 he
makes his feature debit with Bad Day to go Fishing (selected in
the competition programme of the 14th Sofia International Film
Festival). In 2011 he is back in Bulgaria as a member of the
international jury of the Sofia International Film Festival.

Do you enjoy traveling around different festivals? Have you ever been a member of an international jury before this?

I
was a member of a jury once – in Valencia. Festivals give you the
chance to learn about different countries and cultures and to find a
place which surprises with its unfamiliar cinema where you see an
interesting film that captures you, without knowing its origin. I like
it when films deliver something unexpected. From this point of view the
traveling is good but when you have visited 60 festivals, which is what
happened with my feature debut, you don’t have the time to focus on your
next project.
