PRAYASAM VISUAL BASICS

Redundant (Baatil)/Dir : Saddam Hussen /05 Min (probably an error; itis 02 min 04 sec)./Bengali/India/2017 will be the first film to be screened at JB Hall, which is located inside the Films Division campus. Change in socio-economic status adversely affects the individual's way of life after retirement from formal employment. A feeling of low self-worth may be felt due to the loss of earning power and social recognition, negligence by family members, not being consulted for making any decisions, considering oneself to be a burden on the family, among other. According to an estimate, nearly 40% of senior citizens living with their families are reportedly facing abuse of one kind or another, but only 1 in 6 cases actually comes to light. Many of them suffer in silence as they fear humiliation or are too scared to speak up.

The situation is becoming worse due to non awareness about the rights of the elderly people. The phenomenon called ‘grand dumping’ is becoming common in urban areas these days as children are being increasingly intolerant of their parents. Using the metaphor of cycle and motorbike, the film depicts, how the present generation always rejects the older generation, how old parents simply become a liability for the young people. The way the significance of the old cycle diminishes as the new motorbike becomes the new interest, similarly the importance of our parents withers as we grow old and the reigns of the family comes in our hands. When children grow up, get married and are in their own new lives they often forget about their own parents wants and needs, and also try to impose their own idea onto their parents instead of listening.

The Pressure (Chaap)/Dir : Sangeeta Das/05 Min./Bengali/India/2017

SYNOPSIS- According to the WHO, India has the highest rate of depression with 36% of youth battling depression. Depression is expected to become the second leading cause of death by 2020 across the world. The contributing factors to teenage depression include family pressure, unrealistic expectation, lack of proper support system. One in every five youth suffers from mental disorder, withdrawing themselves from social world. Child are always regarded as trophies and they are expected to behave and follow the decisions as per the whims and wishes of the parents and family members. Moreover in our society, there is a stigma attached to any mental health problem, with the implication the victim is responsible for creating it or blamed on the bad omen and superstition and that it can be wished away. It is seen as a sign of weakness and therefore becomes harder to talk about, bringing shame to the individual and his/her family.

A little girl and a teenage girl are roaming around in the park and suddenly three hands tightly hold the hands of the little girl who was swinging a swing and the teenage girl gets petrified. There is an occasion of celebration, full of vibrate colours encircling the little girl. But the colours signify the chains of expectations burdened on the little girl, which is eventually succumbing her childhood. There is a transition from childhood to teenage but still somewhere, the child in the teenage girl still remains. The constant beat of the drum, playing at the occasion signifies the heart beat which keeps going on despite the cacophony of sounds at the occasion of celebration. One after the other, the father, mother and grandmother laden their unfulfilled dreams on the girl. Celebration goes on around the new born and along with it also starts the parents and elders deciding the fate of the child but no one asks the child what he/ she wants; this has been portrayed through the girl simply standing in the midst of such bustling of noise, being ushered with dreams and desires of her family. Everything is scattered at the occasion and the girl, depressed, slowly opens the chains of burdened expectation but there is immense pathos and pain on her face. Suddenly, the mother of the girl calls her to wake up from the slumber and get ready to visit the psychiatrist.
