Overview of the US business for the week of February 1st

Warner Bros.' The Little Things opened this weekend both in theatres and on HBO Max, and led all films with $4.8M in ticket sales.  The crime thriller starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto produced the largest opening for an R-Rated film since the beginning of the pandemic. Universal's The Croods: A New Age continues to impress with family audiences, earning an additional $1.8M in its 10th weekend, with a cume of $43.9M.  Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 1984 earned $1.3M in its 6th week, now with a cume of $39.2M.

Click here to play this week's BOX OFFICE BUZZ video feature, highlighting the award winners announced last week by the National Board of Review including: Best Picture & Director: Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods, ... Actress: Carey Mulligan (for Promising Young Woman) ...Actor: Riz Ahmed (for Sound of Metal).

Our Industry News Summary begins with the wild ride taken by shares of AMC Entertainment, up 300% for the week.  This spike was driven in large part by the announcement from the world's largest exhibitor that it had secured $907M in new funding to help it weather at least two more quarters of greatly reduced ticket sales. We also include a number of stories about resourceful exhibitors, including one drive-in that adjusted successfully to a greatly reduced number of new studio releases in 2020, and a report on how-to take benefit from significant federal relief programs being offered to theatres.

Gower Street Analytics quanifies the re-alignment of the Global Box Office by market in 2020.   While all markets have been impacted by the pandemic, key markets in Asia have experienced less severe declines than those in North American and Europe.

We conclude with our regular film data tables. The Studio Release Calendar provides details on film releases for the next two months, followed by a list of the most recent studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements and the most important new trailers released last week.
