"A FESTIVAL WIFE" TO BE SERIALIZED ON FEST21.COM

Filmfestivals.com, the online source for global film festival news and resources, will serialize "A Festival Wife," a first novel by former Variety reporter Rex Weiner, and publish on fest21.com culminating in Cannes.

Here is the introduction to the second chapter (read more online) Subscribe to receive a chapter every week

Chapter 1

Chapter 2 day one

A Festival Wife by Rex Weiner

Henry Dean, veteran publicist, resists retirement by holding onto his PR job for the San Lorenzo Film Festival, where for twenty-eight years he has stayed at the Hotel Medici, maintaining a long-running affair with his beloved Leticia, one of the hotel's chamber maids. But Henry's job (and love affair) depends upon looking after the Festival's guest of honor - a cantankerous older film director who only needs a little press - and the task is proving much more trouble than anticipated.

The stately hotels along the Passagia saluted the rising Mediterranean sun on the morning of the Festival's first day as I made my way from the Medici Hotel toward the Festival Director's office at the Castello di Festival.

Pavements steamed from the shopkeepers' soapy buckets as they flushed away last night's sour accumulation of cigarette butts and spilt booze. The municipal police, eyes red-rimmed and uniforms lacking some of their starch, studiously re-stacked barriers from the opening night's crush. Poster-hangers affixed movie one-sheets to kiosks with hurried brushes glistening with glue, the out-of-place images of guns and bikinis dripping with the optimism of marketing departments.

Early risers jogged the beach or rippled the drowsy waters of the bay. Vans parked askew curbside re-stocked restaurant kitchens with produce - La Pizza, Argento's, Il Pescatore, l'Operetto, Tre Fiori - and the bars - Zebra, Diavolo, Stanco's Disco, Mike's American Bar, Medalia d'Oro - with beer, wine and liquor, bottles rattling in plastic racks. A transvestite trio fluttered from the Jazz Blue Piano Bar in plumage too fantastic for daylight and, tittering and tottering on high heels, flew around the corner seeking the last vestiges of night in the shadows of the narrow Via Garibaldi, laughter echoing faintly against the cobblestones...Read more on fest21.com
