Nawabzaade, Review: One woman, three men, infinite boredom No, I did not do that! Really! Why would a conscientious critic invert half the picture from the poster? It’s there, on their Facebook page. See for yourself. Those three upside down bodies belong to young bachelors, who go under the euphemism of princes’ sons, but are paupers in real life. They are desperate to find suitable girls to marry, but who will even look at them, let alone marry them? Enter a family that moves i...

Pipsi, Review: A Fish Called Faith Maharashtra state in western India has faced several years of successive droughts in its Vidarbha area. This has led to farmers committing suicides, unable to repay loans and faced with humiliation and recurrent demands from banks and money-lenders, being recurrent defaulters. Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3, Review: Russian Roulette, House of Lords, the Nautch Girl and Privy Purses Here’s a film, about two hours long, that has some great cinematography and imaginative camera angles, impactful music, classy sets and décor, an ambience that lays the foundation of a riveting saga of ‘deceit conspiracy, greed and lust’. You wait anxiously for some great lines of dialogue, some battle of wits, some royal clashes…Alas! You wait in vain. When t...
Mission Impossible-Fall Out, Review: “The greater the suffering, the greater the peace” Sixth in the TV series-to-big-screen franchise, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible is aptly titled Fall Out. Skyscraper, Review: The Rock climber’s burning issues Disaster films have been appearing on the screen for decades. In some of them, it is the earth that plays the villain (earthquakes), in others, it is water (floods), in still others it is wind (tornadoes, hurricanes) and fire, naturally occurring or man-made, is the burning issue in some of the movies. Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, tackles impossible odds in Skyscraper and onlookers applaud his bravura. As we see the crowds playing t...
Dhadak, Review: Kiss kiss kill kill A noun form of the verb dhadakna, which means ‘beating of the heart’, Dhadak re-introduces us to Ishan Khattar and gives us the much-awaited first look at Jahnvi Kapoor. Both have acting parentage, and that comes with a lot of weight. In the first half of the film, the two succeed in captivating the audience with their sheer freshness and electrical chemistry. Then, sadly, formulae and tropism take over, the pulsation of early dhadaks get blocke...
Delhi 47 km, Review: Keep safe distance Title-wise, Delhi 47 sounds like Bombay 405 Miles, made in the 70s. That one did not have a great run, in spite of a star-cast and a reputed director. This one neither has a star cast nor a reputed director, but it does have an actor-writer-producer-director who either lacks knowledge about his responsibilities, or is incompetent and inept at executing them. And the odds that this will run or not run are 47: 1. 35 year-old Shadab Khann earlier wrote an...

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent If you do an internet search for Gilda Radner, at least one thing comes up that would have made her laugh - a ridiculously maudlin celebrity website that asks “Dead or Alive? - Gilda Radner.” Well, the documentary LOVE, GILDA will bring her back to life in an endearing and lump-in-the-throat kind of way on Sept. 21, when Magnolia Pictures and CNN Films release it in theaters. Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF), Youth and Children’s Film Festival Just Film
and PÖFF Shorts have opened submissions for the 2018 edition.
The 22nd edition of PÖFF, running from November 16th to December 2nd, will see a major change in one of the three competition programmes of the festival. The former Estonian Film Competition that used to be judged by the same jury as the First Feature Competition will be turned into a new programme with its own international jury – the Baltic Film Competition – screening a selection of feature-length films made in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The programme requires Estonian premiere for the Lithuanian and Latvian films (no premiere requirements for Estonian films) and is designed as a showcase of the best Baltic cinematic output from the last year. The programme will have one award - Award for Best Baltic Feature Film with a grant of 3200 Euros, shared by the director and producer.
The festival will also continue its two other competition programmes. The Official Selection Competition will look for films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. With world, international or European premiere as a eligibility criterium.
The First Feature Competition, open for filmmakers presenting their feature debut, will accept films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. That have not had their world or international premiere.
Submissions are also open for all the non-competitive sections of the festival. The programme will include around 200 feature films and documentaries. The final day for submissions is the 17th of August.
The 17th Youth and Children’s film festival Just Film is looking for films for its youth and children’s competitions and documentary sections. Submissions will stay open until the 17th of August.
The 2nd PÖFF Shorts, showcasing short films and animations, will run from the 20th to the 25th of November. The festival saw the merging of two separate sub-festivals last year - the animation film festival Animated Dreams and the International Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers. The new festival has retained the identities and most programmes of the former festival. Submissions close on the 25th of August.

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Filmfestivals.com Bruno Chatelin
Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.
Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.
