25th Oldenburg International Film Festival 2018: On the Red Carpet

By LINDSAY R. BELLINGER

20 countries and nearly 50 films will be shown this year at the landmark 25th anniversary of the Oldenburg International Film Festival, which began last night in the quaint and picturesque city of Oldenburg, in Northwest Germany. It runs from September 12-16 at various venues throughout the city. The festival first began as an alternative film festival with a focus on independent and out of the ordinary cinema from the United States, but it has clearly spread its wings over the past twenty-five years while never losing its edge. It's the only film festival that screens films at a maximum security prison, with inmates in attendance. The international film presence is quite impressive this year.

Festival director Torsten Neumann, who also co-created the festival with Thorsten Ritter in 1994, was in high spirits on the red carpet as were the filmmakers and the anxious German festival-goers. A warm and welcoming ambience was felt throughout the evening. Luckily, I had a pretty good spot to take some decent photos.

Tribute honoree Keith Carradine, who will receive his star on the Oldenburg Walk of Fame tomorrow morning, looked dashing and relaxed as he greeted Neumann on the red carpet. The Alan Rudolph film "Ray Meets Helen", which stars Carradine and Sondra Locke, will have its European premiere on Friday. Rudolph's "Trouble in Mind", Ridley Scott's "The Duellists" and Robert Altman's "Nashville" will also screen throughout the festival.

Bruce Robinson is the restrospective honoree this year and his exceptional cult film "Withnail & I" will be screened as well as "Jennifer 8" and "The Rum Diary".

Director/writer Melissa Miller Costanza and actress/singer Molly Ringwald looked lovely on the red carpet. They are here showing Costanza's debut feature film "All These Small Moments", which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. Shot on location in New York City, it's a coming-of-age tale that also delves into problems that arise that hamper marital bliss.

Producer/director Salomé Breziner who has been bringing films to Oldenburg since the early days of the festival, was very present on the red carpet. She's here representing not only the opening film "Unforgiven" but also "Ray Meets Helen" and "King of Beasts", the controversial documentary film about a trophy hunter that makes its world premiere on Saturday.

The opening film "Unforgiven" made its European premiere with Armenian-Russian director Sarik Andreasyan, producer Lenny Levi and screenwriter Matthew Jacobs in attendance. It was an emotional ride watching this piece of cinema based on the devastating July 2, 2002 mid-air collision above Überlingen, Germany that took the lives of so many. Russian architect Vitaly Kaloyev's life was turned upside down with one fell swoop and he was changed forever.
