Jozi Kings movie reviewed by African Screens

Jozi Kings is the latest film by Black Irish Productions. Set in the modern day hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, South Africa, the film gives us a glimpse of the drug smuggling world, in this hard-hitting action drama. It is night and ‘Jim’ is seated on a cliff overlooking the glittering city of Johannesburg. He turns to ‘Chucks’, as blood trickles down the side of his mouth; he exhales the words, “Who knew Johannesburg is this beautiful at night?” Raw and unpredictable, Jozi Kings exposes some emotional realities of drug dealing in South Africa. It brings to light, the unfortunate situation that many Nigerians, who left Nigeria for South Africa - for a better life, have found themselves in. The film follows the life of Chucks, a young, ambitious Nigerian man, who arrives to Johannesburg in the hope of changing his life but quickly finds himself in a desperate situation. He befriends Jim Money, who presents Chucks with a way out - not as honourable as his initial reason for venturing into Johannesburg, but a hint of hope nonetheless. But it is only when the last money in Chucks’ possession is stolen, that he gives in and reluctantly enters the drug dealing world. Jozi Kings is without a doubt a good start for Black Irish Productions. In one simple sentence - the agility of the Canon Mark ii 5D camera allowed for interesting camera placement. Even the lead actor, Anele Beke gave a good performance throughout the film. The transitioning of the character, from a lost individual faced with no hope, to an accomplished, fearless drug lord was impressive and gained both the necessary sympathy and respect due. And though the film’s protagonist displayed great passion in his fight for a better life, I did find myself hoping to have seen Chuks engage a similar passion for his love interest, Portia. Nonetheless, Chuks showed focus in his mission, and it was refreshing to see his charm overflow without the inclusion of the cliché ‘action-movie-sex-scene’. Jozi Kings is a definite must-see as it is truly is a great example of managing a little to produce a refreshing piece of artwork.Jozi Kings movie reviewe by African Screens: Jozi Kings movie poster DVD coming soon
