Young Turkish film directors at the European Parliament

On June 23 2008, TR PLUS - Centre for Turkey in Europe will present a selection of award-winning short films by young Turkish directors in a showing at the European Parliament. The event will contribute to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008 by offering European political and opinion leaders an opportunity to get to know the work of young Turks of different backgrounds and differing world views.

The six films to be shown reveal how close are the concerns of contemporary Turkish creators to those of artists elsewhere in Europe. “Boreas” by Belma Baş, “Fremd” by Hakan Savaş Mican, “Die Liebenden vom Hotel Osman” by İdil Üner, “A Drop of Water” by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, “Apartment” by Seyfi Teoman, and “A Cleaning Lady’s Dreams” by Banu Akseki cover topics ranging from women’s issues, human rights and socioeconomic problems to urban living and the environment.

Following the screening, a panel discussion will take place with TR PLUS President Zeynep Göğüş, European Parliament Greens MEP Cem Özdemir, Alliance of Liberal and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) MEP Ignasi Guardans, and Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Center Representative Ayşegül Oğuz. Organized in Brussels by TR PLUS, the event is hosted by the German Greens Party/EFA (Cem Özdemir, Helga Trüpel), ALDE (Ignasi Guardans), Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Center and Boğaziçi University Alumni Association.
