Toronto Opens with The Journals of Knud Rasmussen

Toronto Opens 2006 Festival with World Premiere of “The Journals of Knud Rasmussen”

The largest and one of the most respected Film Festivals in the world will open its doors to the public with Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn's “The Journals of Knud Rasmussen". Their last film "Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner),” had won the Camera D'or in Cannes and then the prize for best Canadian film here in Toronto in 2001. Festival Co-Director Noah Cowan felt that this was one of the most important films about Canada made in recent years.

The film depicts the father and daughter of the Inuit shaman Ayya and his strong willed daughter Apak. Set in 1922, the lives of the Inuit are on a threshold of change in converging with the modern world. This film is beautifully filmed with a delicate insight to the proud and traditional tribe of the north.

Along with the stellar opening night film, Toronto Film Festival is set to showcase over 350 films from around the world. 61 countries will be represented with the finest in filmmaking be shown. Toronto is noted as being on of the largest Festivals in the world with a dynamic market and discovery of new cinema. Over 90% of the films screening will be having their official world or North American premiere and the film going audience, media and buyers will be hand to reap the benefits.

The beautiful multi cultural city of Toronto is a wonderful host for this Festival and will screen at 23 theaters around the downtown area of Yorkville. With 300,000 public and industry admissions are expected at this year's festival. TIFF is truly responsible for expanding cinema as an enriching cultural part of the city, as well as the county and world.
