Third National TV Viewers Strike in Italy

The Milano Film Festival's organizers is organizing the Third National TV Viewers' Strike, set for December 11 - 12, 2004. Right now we're looking for associations, magazines, websites, books and critical reviews all around the world that have dealt with the topic of television.

Third National TV Viewers' Strike
11 - 12 December 2004
Switch off the TV and enjoy the city life: this is esterni's call for the next TV Viewers' Strike set for December 11 and 12 (starting on Friday 10 at midnight). In June, the second National Strike was joined by 700 thousand Italians. Now it aims to involve a million and a half people.
First called in 1994 in Milan only, this strike has unexpectedly become an international event, with a great reception and countless information queries coming from all over the world. This proves that the television's intrusion in everyday life is widely perceived and followed by a common will of reacting to it.
The TV Viewers' Strike is apolitical, even if it can be easily overwhelmed by the numerous disputes regarding Italian television. It is a protest against the blunting and isolating power of television, to which most people never object, against an uncritical attitude towards programmes and broadcasts.
The aim is to give people one more reason to go out and pep up the city. Not only individuals are urged to turn off their television for a weekend strike: associations, city councils, companies, theatres, cinemas and galleries are invited to take part in it, to tempt an increasing number of people away from their TVs, to invent new formulas for a week-end of celebrations and extraordinary accessibility to the city and its spaces, to offer discounts and reductions to anybody turns up with the remote control.
