Caatje van Leeuwen is a Dutch-born filmmaker who is dedicated to creating motion pictures that tell inspiring, slice of life stories that weave larger social issues with intimate glimpses into the relationships of everyday people. The result is a series of short films that aim to go beyond the inherent beauty of filmmaking as an art form to the beauty of life itself, inspiring hope from otherwise dark corners. Crafted by a team of people that believes creative storytelling can make a difference in the world.
Being a woman director in a largely male oriented profession has not been easy. Three years ago founded Amsterdam-based production company, Sun Cat Productions, with the intention of producing and directing the film projects she had been developing, and has proven to be a driving force for wearing multiple hats to get the projects done. She served as a writer, producer, co-director and star of the acclaimed short William, that deals with the relationship between a young mother and her brilliant but autistic son.
William was Sun Cat Productions debut film and was featured in the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner. The film will make its US Premiere at the 2016 LA Femme International Film Festival in Beverly Hills, October 20 – 23. The short, written, directed and produced by van Leeuwen, was co-directed by Richard Valk. William is now being developed into a full-length feature film that van Leeuwen will direct. The film helped van Leeuwen land a top manager, Steve Smith, of the Los Angeles-based Stagecoach entertainment. William made an indelible impression on Smith, calling it: "An exquisitely deep, character driven story that touches the heart and resonates with meaning."
