We are also delighted to welcome new additions to our DOK.fest Munich family, with two new Munich cinemas joining us as venues for our film screenings for the first time.
Another highlight is our “The Sound of Music” section, featuring five music documentaries and two live performances! We’re also introducing this spectacular program to you today.

Advance ticket sales are now open for all nine films we are screening at Deutsches Theater. Book your ticket now and be there when Sandra Hüller takes on the role of literary icon Ingeborg Bachmann (INGEBORG BACHMANN - JEMAND, DER EINMAL ICH WAR), or when three researchers leave their desks behind and turn into activists (DAS GEWICHT DER WELT), and don’t miss the chance to find out more about Europe’s answer to SpaceX (HER RACE TO SPACE). Our DOK.fest family is growing: we are delighted that two Munich arthouse cinemas are joining us as new venues this year. The Monopol Kino, the popular film art institution at Nordbad, will be showing a varied programme of documentary films from 7 to 10 May as part of our 41st edition, and is also already the go-to venue for our DOK-aroundtheclock screenings. With Theatiner Filmkunst in the heart of the city, we are gaining a true cinephile cinema as a new platform for documentary film – from 7 to 16 May.
Munich’s Kunstkraftwerk – Bergson is hosting us again this year. From 8 to 17 May, we will be screening four films with a focus on art and culture there. Stay up to date and follow us on our channels when we publish the full programme next week.
The Sound of Music – Filme über Musiker*innen und ihre Geschichten
Filmstill aus WACKEN – HEARTS FULL OF METAL
As part of its The Sound of Music section, DOK.fest München once again offers a best-of selection of the latest music documentaries, covering a wide range of musical styles and personalities. We see a portrait of the Malian duo Amadou et Mariam (AMADOU ET MARIAM – THE BLIND COUPLE FROM MALI), hear the voices of three female black metal musicians (HEX), witness the creation of new music by the Ensemble Modern (ENSEMBLE MODERN – WHY WE PLAY) and discover how music and nostalgia intertwine in Ireland (CELTIC UTOPIA). We also witness the evolution of the Wacken Festival from a village open-air concert to a metal mecca (WACKEN – HEARTS FULL OF METAL), and to round off the festival, a portrait of the cult band Sportfreunde Stiller is unveiled in the presence of the band (SPORTFREUNDE STILLER – MIT DEM HERZ IN DER HAND).
The Live Acts:
On May 9, following the screening, the Wacken band Skyline and special guests will perform live at the Deutsches Theater. On May 10, musicians from the Ensemble Modern will perform live at the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk following the screening.
