Robert Altman Retrospective in Ankara
The Retrospective program of the 23rd Ankara International Film Festival will be hosting the films of the prominent American director Robert Altman (1925-2006).
Altman had a ‘love-hate’ relationship with Hollywood. “We're not against each other. They sell shoes and I make gloves” is how he defined his relationship with them. In his career of 55 years, Altman never compromised from his eccentric and innovative style and always worked on projects of his own desire.
Altman's legacy and contribution to the independent movement made him the father of the American Independent Cinema. As one of the most notable directors of ’New Hollywood’ cinema, Robert Altman is best known for discussing traditional values of the ‘American Dream’ with a critical approach.
Altman is celebrated with his signature style - overlapping dialogue, improvisational acting, mobile camera and zooms and rebellious humour-. He reached his fame by directing one of the greatest anti-war films (M*A*S*H) and continued his career with a wide range of exceptional masterpieces as ‘The Long Goodbye,’, ‘Nashville’ or ‘Gosford Park’. In addition, though he didn’t follow the traditional route of Hollywood, he worked together with most of the Hollywood stars.
Altman had not only been exceptional and a critical director but also had proven himself as a master narrator by skilfully portraying in his films the United States in the 20th Century. He will remain to be one of the most important figures of all time. Seven of Robert Altman films, opening up a whole new world, will meet with the precious audience of Ankara.
• Thieves Like Us, 1974
• Brewster McCloud, 1970
• M*A*S*H, Robert Altman, 1970
• Images, Robert Altman, 1972
• McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Robert Altman, 1971
• 3 Women, Robert Altman, 1977
