Porto Femme – International Film Festival kicks off today

The Porto Femme International Film Festival is marked by its opening and closing ceremonies.

🌟We kick off the 9th edition on April 21 at 9:15 PM. The opening session will be followed by the screening of the International Competition film Sugar Island, by Johanné Gómez Terrero (Dominican Republic/Spain, 91 min, fiction).

🌟On April 26, we close the festival with an awards ceremony announcing and presenting prizes to the films distinguished by the Jury. The event takes place at 7:15 PM at Batalha Centro de Cinema.

We’re looking forward to having you with us to celebrate this ninth edition!

PT| Em cada edição do Porto Femme, queremos também homenagear as mulheres cineastas portuguesas que, com o seu trabalho, contribuíram de forma única para o cinema no nosso país. ✨

A nona edição destaca a geógrafa e investigadora Raquel Soeiro de Brito, uma pioneira do cinema português! Tendo celebrado recentemente o centenário do seu nascimento, o seu trabalho continua a ser fundamental para entender as relações que existem entre cinema e território.

De olhar atento às geografias e paisagens, ela revela através dos seus filmes, diferentes formas habitar e interpretar o mundo! 🗺️

Após o momento de homenagem, a investigadora Ana Catarina Pereira estará presente para um pequeno discurso sobre o percurso desta pioneira. ✨

ENG| At each edition of Porto Femme, we also take a moment to honour Portuguese women filmmakers who, through their work, have made a unique contribution to cinema in our country.  ✨

The ninth edition highlights the geographer and researcher Raquel Soeiro de Brito, a pioneer of Portuguese cinema. Having recently celebrated the centenary of her birth, her work remains essential for understanding the relationships between cinema and territory.

With a keen eye for geographies, and landscapes, she revealed through her films, different ways of inhabiting, and interpreting the world.

Following the tribute, researcher Ana Catarina Pereira will be present for a conversation about the journey of this pioneering figure. ✨

Em parceria com a Cinemateca Portuguesa, como antecipação ao seu ciclo Pioneiras do Cinema Português que irá ser apresentado em maio, a curadoria de Ricardo Vieira Lisboa reúne obras de três cineastas que vieram posicionar a mulher no cinema português!

🎶 E para tornar tudo ainda mais especial, alguns dos filmes que fazem parte desta sessão vão ser musicalizados ao vivo, numa sonoplastia concebida pela artista Lula Pena! Estabelecemos um diálogo entre a imagem e o som, onde a projeção se transforma numa experiência imersiva!

ENG| As this session is dedicated to the pioneering women of Portuguese cinema, we want to bring to the screen some fundamental works by the first women who dared to make films. ✨

In partnership with the Portuguese Cinematheque, as a preview of its Pioneers of Portuguese Cinema cycle to be presented in May, the curation by Ricardo Vieira Lisboa brings together works by three filmmakers who helped position women within Portuguese cinema.

🎶 And to make it even more special, some of the films in this session will feature live musical accompaniment, with a soundscape created by the artist Lula Pena. We’re creating a dialogue between image and sound, where the screening becomes an immersive experience.

ENG| The ninth edition of Porto Femme focuses on work and, from the idea of curation as an act of care and tension, artist Luísa Sequeira presents “CURARE”, a video art exhibition that brings together works centered on editing. In this program, we can explore the relationships between the visible and the invisible, between presence and erasure, and in doing so, affirm cinema as a space of resistance. 📹

PT| Na primeira conversa, “O que aconteceu às Mulheres Pioneiras do Cinema?”, procuramos refletir sobre a presença das mulheres na história do cinema. Olhamos para o seu apagamento histórico e para as invisibilidades que continuam a repetir-se. Este será também um momento para falar sobre a importância dos arquivos das mulheres e sobre a necessidade de reescrever a história, de forma a tornar visível o seu contributo.

Trata-se de uma conversa sobre mitos, ficções e verdades não reveladas, que nos levam a reconhecer a importância fundamental destas mulheres para a construção do cinema.

Moderado por Ana Sofia Pereira, contamos com a presença de Ana Catarina Vieira, de Luísa Sequeira e de Ricardo Vieira Lisboa para guiarem o nosso pensamento sobre o tema.

ENG| In the first conversation, “What Happened to the Women Pioneers of Cinema?”, we seek to reflect on the presence of women in the history of cinema. We look at their historical erasure and the invisibilities that continue to recur. This will also be a moment to discuss the importance of women’s archives and the need to rewrite history, in order to make their contribution visible.

This is a conversation about myths, fictions and untold truths, which lead us to recognise the fundamental importance of these women in the development of cinema.

Moderated by Ana Sofia Pereira, we are joined by Ana Catarina Vieira, Luísa Sequeira and Ricardo Vieira Lisboa to discuss the topic of this conversation.

PT| Nesta conversa com diferentes festivais internacionais dedicados ao cinema realizado por mulheres, propõe-se uma reflexão sobre os desafios atuais da programação, da circulação e da sua sustentabilidade. Além disso, procuramos entender qual o seu papel na promoção da visibilidade, bem como na criação de redes e de novos espaços para o cinema feito por mulheres. 

No final, procuramos que todas as pessoas participantes levem consigo uma nova perspetiva sobre esta área, assim como ideias inspiradoras para promover formas de trabalho mais justas, sustentáveis e conscientes!

ENG| In this dialogue with different international film festivals dedicated to cinema made by women, we aim to reflect on the current challenges facing programming, distribution and sustainability. Furthermore, we seek to understand their role in promoting visibility, as well as in creating networks and new spaces for cinema made by women. 

Ultimately, we hope that all participants will take away a new perspective on this field, as well as inspiring ideas for promoting fairer, more sustainable, and more conscious ways of working!

Moderated by Skadi Loist, we will be joined by Nualla O’Sullivan, representative of the Women Over 50 Film Festival (United Kingdom), Paola Molano, representative of the Elles Tournent (Belgium), and Silvia di Marco, representative of the Olhares do Mediterrâneo (Portugal), to guide our thinking on the topic.

PT| “O Caminho dos 50/50” é uma conversa que se foca em refletir sobre o percurso que é preciso construir, para um dia se alcançar a meta dos 50/50. Pensaremos, em conjunto, com pessoas profissionais da indústria e pessoas de associações que representam as mulheres no cinema e no audiovisual na Europa.

Coletivamente, procuramos criar um espaço de diálogo aberto, com partilha de experiências e reflexão conjunta sobre os desafios e as oportunidades na construção de um setor mais inclusivo.

Moderado por Patrícia Nogueira, contamos com a presença de Alexia Muiños Ruiz, representante da EWA Network, de Elene Naveriani, realizadore, Nati Juncal, representante da CIMA, e Leonor Bettencourt Loureiro, representante da MUTIM,  para guiarem o nosso pensamento sobre o tema.

ENG| “The Path to 50/50” is a discussion that focuses on reflecting on the path we need to forge in order to one day achieve the 50/50 target. We will be discussing this together with industry professionals and representatives from organisations that champion women in film and the audiovisual sector across Europe.

Together, we aim to create a space for open dialogue, sharing experiences and reflecting collectively on the challenges and opportunities involved in building a more inclusive sector.

Moderated by Patrícia Nogueira, we will be joined by Alexia Muiños Ruiz, a representative of the EWA Network; Elene Naveriani, a filmmaker; Nati Juncal, a representative of CIMA; and Leonor Bettencourt Loureiro, a representative of MUTIM, to guide our discussion on the topic.

🗣️ This conversation will be conducted entirely in English.  

PT| A última conversa, aquela que fecha este ciclo, aborda formas de trabalho frequentemente invisibilizadas ou marginalizadas, incluindo o trabalho sexual, o trabalho de parto, do cuidado e de todo aquele que é invisível e constantemente não reconhecido. Nesta sessão que ocorre no dia da liberdade, procuramos refletir sobre as revoluções que ainda precisam de ocorrer para que se possa ter mais dignidade no trabalho das mulheres e de todas as pessoas. 

Moderada por Diana Choi Loureiro, contamos com a presença de AmaranteAbramovici,de Andrea Peniche e de pessoas representantes das associaçõesMTS e SAMANE para nos provocarem reflexões em torno do tema.

ENG| The final talk, which brings this cycle to a close, addresses forms of work that are often overlooked or marginalised, including sex work, labour, care work, and all forms of work that are invisible and consistently unrecognised. In this session, which takes place on Freedom Day, we aim to reflect on the revolutions that still need to take place in order to ensure greater dignity in the work of women and all people. 

Moderated by Diana Choi Loureiro, we are joined by Amarante Abramovici, Andrea Peniche and representatives from the MTS and SAMANE associations to provoke reflection on the topic.

PT| Após uma seleção difícil, conseguimos reunir todas as fotografias que irão estar penduradas nas paredes do MIRA | artes performativas e que fazem parte da exposição "A Mulher e o Trabalho". A partir das 16h00 do dia 18 de abril, irás poder ver 50 fotografias impressas, e outras dezenas projetadas. Todas as pessoas autoras escolhidas devolvem-nos um olhar sobre o trabalho que vai para além da sua função económica, mas também social, política e existencial.

ENG| After a challenging selection process, we’ve gathered all the photographs that will be displayed on the walls of MIRA | performing arts as part of the exhibition “Women and Work.” Starting at 4:00 PM on April 18, you’ll be able to see 50 printed photographs, along with dozens projected. All the selected artists offer us perspectives on work that go beyond its economic function, touching also on its social, political, and existential dimensions.
