“Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies” exhibition at the Ghent Film Festival

On the
initiative of and in collaboration with the Ghent Film Festival, the Province
of East Flanders presents “Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies”. The exhibition,
organized by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen, Berlin,
in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Beverly
Hills, California, delves into the career and personal life of the legendary
Swedish director. It will run from 4 October 2011 to 15 January 2012 in the
Caermersklooster – Provincial Cultural Centre in Ghent, Belgium.

For the first time since his death in 2007, the
Bergman Foundation in Stockholm granted unprecedented broad access to the
personal papers of the legendary Swedish director, allowing for a detailed
examination of his life and vast creative output.

“Truth and Lies” will provide unique insights into Bergman’s film, theater work
and personal life, with sections devoted to his early creative efforts, his
ascent as an artist and his struggles with faith. The exhibition’s film
projections and specially created montages will allow the visitor to delve into
the full range of his work, from his earliest films to his major international
successes. Original scripts, notebooks, film schedules, sketches, posters,
photographs and other paper materials will be accompanied by items such as set
models and costumes.

Throughout his career Ingmar Bergman produced 130 stage productions, 42 radio
productions, 23 television plays and 39 movies. He received nine Oscar®
nominations for writing, directing or producing, and was presented with the
Academy’s Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1970. Three of his films won
Oscars® for Best Foreign Language Film (The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass
Darkly
and Fanny & Alexander). In 1997, at the Cannes Film
Festival, his colleagues honored him as “the best film director of all times”.

The curators of the exhibition are Kristina Jaspers and Nils Warnecke.

With this exhibition the Province of East Flanders continues the tradition of
showcasing an important body of work associated with the Ghent Film Festival.

Organized by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen,
Berlin, in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,
Beverly Hills, California.

Presented in collaboration with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, Svensk
Filmindustri and the Swedish Film Institute, Stockholm.

With support of the Swedish Embassy, Berlin and Washington, D.C. and The
Goethe-Institut, Los Angeles.

More information about the exhibition will be released in June.
