OPENING FILM

Imagine will be opened this year by Rutger Hauer's newest film, Hobo with a Shotgun, showing a completely different side of the star. Hauer plays the hobo from the title who decides to purge his crime-ridden town from all scum when his local pawnshop is robbed in his presence.

Hobo with a Shotgun, directed by Jason Eisener, started life as the winner of the fake trailer film competition that went along with the release of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's ode to B-films from the 70's. The long version of Hobo is a similar homage, an action comedy in flashy Technicolor, with overly tough one-liners and over-the-top special effects that are as revolting as they are hilarious.

THE NIGHT OF TERROR

Chills and cold sweat. In the most beautiful cinema in the world, the large theatre of Tuschinski, you're happy to give them free reign.

This year, our annual all-night horror marathon will be kicked off by Husk, in which creepy scarecrows are gunning for a bunch of twentysomethings stranded in the middle of nowhere. A welcome addition to the ‘rural horror' genre, in the same vein as films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Children of the Corn.

Insidious is another word for ‘sneaky' or ‘treacherous'. It's also the latest film from the men behind Saw, James Wan and Leigh Wannell, and can be summarized as an update of the classic Poltergeist. But, as a hastily summoned spiritualist explains: ‘It's not the house that's haunted. It's your son.' So even moving house is no solution.

The closing film Hell Driver fits perfectly in a recent NoT tradition: crazed Japanese splatter, while the sun is already coming up again outside. Director Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) returns this year with Hell Driver and goes wilder than ever. With exploding zombies, chainsaw-wielding zombies and...a zombie cruise missile!

We'll keep one title secret for now. Just to make the Night of Terror even more suspenseful than it already is.

What's no secret is that the annual Scream Queen Contest will also return this year. Appropriate prizes will be awarded to the most bloodcurdling scream of the night.

The Night of Terror

Night of Sat, April 16, on Sun, April 17, Pathé Tuschinski 1, doors open at midnight.
