Frosbitten and Adams Apples win at Fantasporto

The vikings took over the 26th edition of the Oporto International Film Festival - Fantasporto.
Great winners in a year that showed the vitality of European cinema

Swedish Film Frostbitten by Anders Banke won the Grand Prix Fantasporto 2006 Best Film Award in the Official Fantasy Section, with Adam¹s Apples by Anders Thomas Jensen came out also a winner as the Best Film and the Best Actor Award in the 16th Directors Week.

Also a winner was Animal by Roselyne Bosch. This film, co-produced by António da Cunha Telles and with actor Diogo Infante in the leading role, is the Oporto Candidate to the Méliès D¹Or European Award, as Best Europe Fantasy Feature in Competition 2006. Animal also won the Best Screenplay award in the Fantasy section.

The newest competition, Orient Express, for oriental films had two of the most important names of todays cinema as big winners, Chan Wook Park with Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Kim Ki Duk with The Bow.

Frostbitten, the Grand Prix winner of Fantasporto 2006 is a modern vampire film. The international jury of the Fantasy section whose members were Maria João Sigalho (Portugal), Chozin Zeong (South Korea), Rachel Belofsky (USA), Nicolas Debot (Sweden) and Christian Hallman (Sweden), awarded Hungarian film Johanna by director Kornél Mundruczó, with the Special Award of the Jury and Best Actress went to Orsi Tóth who played the lead. Johanna is an operatic fantasy drama, already presented at the Cannes festival. The important Best Director Award went to Canada and to a first direction by former actor Robin Aubert from Quebec with his Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés, an auspicious debut. A study in paranoia and loneliness gave Jaume Garcia Arija the Best Actor Award for Zulo coming from Spain.


16th Directors Week Fantasporto 2006

Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen won the Directors Week with Adam¹s Apples. The director of The Green Butchers (a winner of the Directors Week in 2003 and the winner of the Méliès D¹Or that same year) came back with a very dark comedy. Apart from Best Film award, this feature also won the Best Screenplay (for Anders Thomas Jensen) and the Best Actor Awards (Ulrich Thomensen). The Special Award of the Jury went to Be With Me by Eric Khoo (Singapore). The Best Director Award went to Dutch Pieter Kuijpers for his film OffScreen, an intriguing thriller about hostages in a big corporation of Amsterdam. Best Actress Award went to Spanish actress Victoria Abril, for her brilliant acting in Miguel Bardem¹s Incautos. Hustling is the subject of this feature. The Jury members of the Directors week were director Zézé Gamboa (Angola), producer Taru Venalainem (Finland) and director Julian Richards (United Kingdom).

Secção Oficial Orient Express

The Jury of the Official Section Orient Express, Adelino Ramos (Portugal), Jason Arnopp (United Kingdom) and Filipe Pedro (Portugal) chose Sympathy For Lady Vengeance by Chan Wook Park as Best Film. The director of Old Boy wins again in the festival with a film that closes a trilogy about violence and vengeance. The Special Prize went to The Bow . This is the most recent feature by the director of The Isle e 3-Iron . Kim Ki Duk continues to dedicate his attention to love stories of a different kind, this time, an old man and a girl.

HOMAGE TO MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA

The festival dedicated one evening to the homage to Director Manoel de Oliveira, the Oporto Born veteran director) and the oldest still in activity (97 years old and still filming in Paris Belle Toujours, his most recent). The screening of his Magic mirror , was the preview of the event.

The numbers of Fantasporto 2006

About 100, 000 festival goers, five screens, an art exhibition by Belgian film maker and artist Manu Gomez, about 30,000 regular attendees, huge media coverage With a budget of about 4 million euros, the festival has the support of both State and private. Fourteen Days and in five theatres, Fantasporto had more than 200 screenings, (150 festures and around 80 shorts) . Both National and international guests felt the Portuguese hospitality with 200 accredited media people, about 40 from abroad and 6 hotels.

Fantasporto will return next year for its 27th edition 23rd February till the 3rdMarch at the Rivoli ­ Teatro Municipal, in Oporto, World Heritage City and land of the portwine.
