FIFDH Paris 2010 Awards

> FIFDH Paris 2010 Awards :

The 8th edition of the Paris International Film Festival on Human Rights (FIFDH) which took place at the Nouveau Latina cinema (4th arr.) from 9-16 March managed to reveal the complexity of human rights breaches as well as those of economic social and cultural rights (DESC) and civil and political rights.

The juries of the "Creative Documentaries" and "Investigative reports" categories were made up of two teams of professionals from the fields of cinema, journalism and human rights protection.

Investigative reports

The jury of the «Investigative reports» category, Véronique Gaymard, RFI journalist, Frédéric Joli, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in France, Hervé de Ruggiero, FNARS's managing director and Patrick Sibourd, director of the distribution company Nourfilms chose to award :

> the Grand Prix to the film «Burma VJ, reporting from a closed country», directed by Anders Ostergaard. Véronique Gaymard, the jury's spokesperson, points out that «this film is an exceptional document, an account from the inside, on this rebellion which seemed to be able to weaken the Burmese authorities, a broken dream. (...)»

> The Prix Spécial du Jury was awarded to «Buenos días, nous continuons la guerre !» by Anita Blumer on the violence in Guatemala. A film which is set more than 10 years after the signing of the peace treaty, following a civil war which caused more than 200 000 deaths and 40 000 people to go missing. «It's a little known reality, and Anita Blumer's film describes this impunity to which people from the poor neighbourhoods of Guatemala City, the capital, are confronted, through the story of the kidnapping then killing of a little girl.» Read more on this film

> A special distiction was awarded to the film «The blood of Kouan Kouan» by Yorgos Avgeropoulos, «because it describes a situation which repeats itself on all continents: the deterioration of the environment by national and international companies.»

Student jury

«Pétition : la cour des plaignants» was awarded the student jury's Grand Prix. «This choice was made by Z. Liang's vital engagement to his country, contemporary China. This intimist inhabited documentary, allows us to share the daily life of the  petitioners by means of a 13-year long immersion filming» state the student jury.

The student jury's Prix Spécial went to Yorgos Avgeropoulos' film «The blood of Kouan Kouan». «It is representative of many alarming situations imposed by economic neo-liberalism. The captivating direction of the film immerses us in the Amazonian jungle where peoples and their culture are sacrificed on the altar of Capital in the name of oil companies.»

We hope to see many of you next March 2011 for a new edition of the Paris FIFDH.
