Festival of German Films in Tokyo

The 4th Festival of German Films in Tokyo will be presented with a familiar partner, the Goethe Institut in Japan, and further German and Japanese partners. The festival is being held within a new framework this year and will have a stronger presence in Tokyo's film landscape.

On October 31, the festival will be opened by KRABAT by Marco Kreuzpaintner. The director Marco Kreuzpaintner, actor Robert Stadlober and producer Uli Putz will be there in person to introduce the film to the audience.

Other films in the main program for Tokyo are: NORTH FACE (NORDWAND) by Philipp Stoelzl, HANAMI - CHERRY BLOSSOMS (HANAMI – Kirschblueten) by Doris Doerrie, BERLIN CALLING by Hannes Stoehr, CLARA by Helma Sanders-Brahms, RABBIT WITHOUT EARS (KEINOHRHASEN) by Till Schweiger and THE WAVE (DIE WELLE) by Dennis Gansel. We will be showing the short BROTHER, BROTHER (BRUDER, BRUDER) by Lars Kreyßig from our 11th Next Generation program. The directors Dennis Gansel, Philipp Stoelzl, Hannes Stoehr as well as the actors Florian Lukas and Jennifer Ulrich will be introducing their films in person to the audiences.

Two classics are in the program this year after the great success of the silent movie screenings in recent years: THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI (DAS KABINETT DES DOKTOR CALIGARI) by Robert Wiene and THE GOLEM (DER GOLEM) by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese. Both films will be accompanied with live music by the composer and pianist Aljoscha Zimmermann and the violinist Sabrina Hausmann.

German Films will be organising a dinner with Japanese distributors where representatives of the German sales companies will have an opportunity to inform their Japanese clients about new films.

The festival's partners are: BKM, the German Federal Film Board (FFA), FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, FilmFoerderung Hamburg, Filmstiftung NRW, Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Wuerttemberg, Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung, Nordmedia, AG Kurzfilm, Transit Film, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, Goethe Institut Tokyo, Mercedes-Benz, Lufthansa, Bayer, TÜV Rheinland, DHL, Cinefil.
