RETROSPECTIVE ASIA LAUGHS!What makes Asia laugh? A retrospective curated by Roger Garcia will show the best of Asian comedy from the 20s to the present day. From the 1922 silent short - the oldest existing Chinese film - to the James Bond parody from Malaysia of the 60s (alias Mat Bond!) via the adventures of the Hong Kong actor Michael Hui (Asia's answer to Jerry Lewis), who will be coming to Udine as the Festival's special guest, where he will receive the special Lifetime Achievement Golden Mulberry Award from Far East Film. Asia Laughs! will also pay special tribute to the popular Japanese director Segawa Masaharu, who created some of the best-loved characters of Japanese comedy in the 60s and the 70s. Asia Laughs! will also be published as a book, edited by Roger Garcia (Festival consultant and Director of the Hong Kong Film Festival). The book will be an addition to the collection of volumes published previously for cinema lovers and film experts alike. Gar cia's volume will explore different, comedic styles, directors, and productive strategies. The films will be screened at Teatro Nuovo in the morning and at the Visionario in the afternoon.
FOCUS PINK WINKHot nights at the Visionario with Japanese eroticism of Pink Eiga films! To complete this look at the past, there will be a focus on Pink Eiga, curated by Roland Domenig, featuring erotic Japanese arthouse films, that will reestablish the genre which has been wrongly overlooked for so long. The programme of 16 titles will shed light on the legendary Japanese producer Asakura Daisuke (a woman operating under a man's name!) and Kokuei, the production company she created in 1956 with the aim of making educational films that went on to make low budget soft erotica in the 60s. From that moment on, the Japanese Pink films have confirmed both their box office power and their extraordinary creative freedom. Entire generations of perfectly respectable directors (such as Takita Yojiro, director of the Oscar-winning Departures) began their filmmaking careers at Kokuei, making softcore films against a backdrop of philosophical reflections. Amongst the key events of the focus is our screening at the Teatro Nuovo of the recent Underwater Love by Imaoka Shinji, a unique example of a musical Pink film (Sunday 1st May, midnight screening). Except for Underwater Love, all the Pink screenings will take place at the Visionario in the evening.
FEFF FOR JAPANJoin the fundraising effort for our Japanese brotheres in their time of need by purchasing the Far East Film bag at the bookshop in the Teatro Nuovo.
Far East Film will be supporting our Japanese brothers who have been affected by the terrible earthquake with the FEFF FOR JAPAN fundraising initiative. Illustrator and graphic artist Guido Scarabottolo has designed the logo for the fundraising campaign, which will be featured on the Festival bags. For those who want to make further donations, Far East Film has created the following link: www.fareastfilm.com/feffforjapan. All profits from the sales of the bags will be handed over to the Japanese Civic Force which is providing concrete assistance to the population of Northern Japan.
FAR EAST NIGHTSThere's more than just cinema at the Far East Film Festival. The best DJ sets are coming soon to the Far East Village @ Parco del Cormor, the brand new covered venue. After a day of screenings, there's nothing better than to relax with a bit of dancing! Making a return this year are the Far East Nights, which will be taking place just outside of the centre of Udine, at the Far East Village @ Parco del Cormor, a covered club where the combination of beats and metropolitan sounds will have you dancing through the night. Kicking off the events on Saturday 30th April will be a true master, Greg Wilson from London, a veteran of the dance scene. Following on from this, on Thursday 5 April, at the Visionario, will be Zhao, a Pekinese DJ who mixes the sounds from 5 different continents. On Friday 6 May, the Far East Village will play host to the Sri Lankan force of nature Mrs. Rea K, for whom Beware Communication has organised the supporting act DJ Agazzi & Bhard. Last but by no means least, a DJ who requires no introduction will be performing a set for the Closing Night of the Festival: Andy Butler, Hercules & Love Affair, whose hit single single Blind was recorded in collaboration with Antony and the Johnsons. This evening is organised in association with the record label Reddarmy. Supporting act, Electrosacher. But Far East Nights don't end here: to complete the list, there is also an event that will be taking place on Wednesday 4 May on Via Paolo Sarpi.
EVENTSParties, martial arts, games, dance, Cosplay Contest, FEFF market and lots of music will invade Udine: the whole city will open their eyes to the Far East and will by animated, day after day, by a set of fringe events organised by the Far East Film Festival. Come and discover them with us! The fringe events will begin on Thursday 28 April in Via Mercatovecchio with the FEFF Market, stocked with authentic Asian products alongside, for the first time this year, traditional Friulan produce. 20 stalls will be there until Sunday 1 May, offering the best selection of Asian objects and delicacies. Next, the Festa in Piazza will last 24 giddy hours on 29 April, filling the Piazza Libertà, Piazzetta del Lionello, Via Mercatovecchio and the gardens of Palazzo Morpurgo with martial arts, dragon dance, Chinese fortune telling, ikebana, the game of go, tea ceremony, eastern-inspired aperitivi, tasting sessions, live DJ and band sets, jazz from the Far East Orchestra and the lively Les Tambours de Topolò. But it doesn't finish here - on Saturday 30 April, there will be the Cosplay Contest, a crazy parade of costumes inspired by Asian pop culture, with Gothic Lolitas taking part for the first time this year. 28.04.2011 | Editor's blog Cat. : actor Alan Mak Alberto Zaccheroni Andy Butler Antony Asia Asian Cinema Astra Central Intelligence Agency China coach Consultant Contact Details Director Entertainment Entertainment Far East Far East Village Felix Chong Festival Giovanni da Udine Greg Wilson Guido Scarabottolo Hercules Human Interest Human Interest illustrator and graphic artist Indonesia IPHONE Japan Japanese Civic Force Jerry Lewis Johnsons London Malaysia Michael Hui Mongolia Natural Disaster northern Japan Person Career Person Location Philippines Producer Roger Garcia Roland Domenig Segawa Masaharu Shama Town Singapore South Korea Taiwan Takita Yojiro Thailand the Far East Film Festival the Hong Kong film festival the Oscar Udine Vietnam www.fareastfilm.com/feffforjapan FESTIVALS
