Cine Las Americas Announces Opening Night Film
American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez Will Open CLAIFF28
We are honored to announce the Opening Night film for the 28th annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival (CLAIFF28), taking place May 13 - 17, 2026 at the Austin Film Society Cinema.
We open this year’s festival with the Austin premiere of American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez, directed by David Alvarado.
Winner of the 2026 Sundance Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary, the film honors the life and legacy of Luis Valdez, a foundational voice in the Chicano Movement whose work in theater and film continues to shape the landscape of American storytelling.
From Zoot Suit to La Bamba, the film follows Valdez’s path from the farmworker movement to the stage and screen, illuminating how his storytelling gave voice to Chicano culture, and political struggle.
Screening will be followed by a conversation with special guests (to be announced) and a reception.
The full festival schedule, including individual tickets and 2-day passes, will be announced the week of April 20 - stay tuned for more updates. We are thrilled to celebrate another season of community and cinema with you!
