Ang lee wins gold again at Venice awards

The 64th Venice Film Festival came to an end on Saturday 8 September. The awards ceremony took place, along with the Golden Lion of the 75th Anniversary presented to Bernardo Bertolucci, in the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema. The Golden Lion for Best Film goes to Se, Jie (Lust, Caution) by Ang Lee; the Silver Lion for Best Director goes to Brian De Palma for Redacted; the Special Jury Prize goes to La Graine et le mulet by Abdellatif Kechiche and I’m not There by Todd Haynes. The Volpi Cups for Best Actors go to Brad Pitt and to Cate Blanchett. Check out the full list of official awards.

VENEZIA 64

The Venezia 64 Jury at the 64th Venice Film Festival, chaired by Zhang Yimou and comprised of Catherine Breillat, Jane Campion, Emanuele Crialese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Ferzan Ozpetek and Paul Verhoeven, having viewed all twenty-three films in competition, has decided as follows:

GOLDEN LION for Best Film:
SE, JIE (LUST, CAUTION) by Ang LEE (USA/China/China, Taiwan)

SILVER LION for Best Director to:
Brian DE PALMA for the film: REDACTED (USA)

SPECIAL JURY PRIZE to (ex aequo):
LA GRAINE ET LE MULET by Abdellatif KECHICHE (France)

I’M NOT THERE by Todd HAYNES (USA)

COPPA VOLPI for Best Actor:
Brad PITT in the film THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD by Andrew DOMINIK (USA)

COPPA VOLPI for Best Actress:

MARCELLO MASTROIANNI AWARD for Best Young Actor or Actress:

The Jury is delighted to acknowledge the consistent brilliance of Nikita Mikhalkov’s body of work. His new film is once again a confirmation of his mastery in exploring and revealing to us, with great humanity and emotion, the complexity of existence.

ORIZZONTI
The Orizzonti Jury at the 64th Venice Film Festival, comprised of Gregg Araki (President), Hala Alabdalla Yakoub, Giorgia Fiorio, Ulrich Gregor and Frederick Wiseman, has unanimously decided to award the following prizes:

ORIZZONTI PRIZE to:
SÜGISBALL (AUTUMN BALL) by Veiko ÕUNPUU (Estonia)
The Orizzonti Prize is supported by Fondation Groupama Gan pour le Cinéma with a cash prize of 20,000 Euro.

ORIZZONTI DOC PRIZE to:
WUYONG (USELESS) by Jia ZHANGKE (China)

SPECIAL MENTION to:
KAGADANAN SA BANWAAN NING MGA ENGKANTO (DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS) by Lav DIAZ (Philippines)

Premio Venezia Opera Prima “Luigi De Laurentiis”
The Venezia Opera Prima Jury at the 64th Venice Film Festival, comprised of Bill Mechanic (President), Randa Chahal Sabbag, Rupert Everett, Liu Jie and Valeria Solarino, has unanimously decided to award the

Leone del Futuro - Premio Venezia Opera Prima “Luigi De Laurentiis” to:
LA ZONA di Rodrigo PLÁ (Giornate degli autori-Venice Days, Spain/Mexico)

Aurelio De Laurentiis and Filmauro award a cash prize, of 100,000 USD, to the winning first film (50,000 to the director, 50,000 to the producer). To the director, an additional film voucher for 40,000 Euro will also be awarded, offered by Kodak.

CORTO CORTISSIMO
The Corto Cortissimo Jury at the 64th Venice Film Festival, comprised of François-Jacques Ossang (President), Yasmine Kassari and Roberto Perpignani, has unanimously decided to award the following prizes:
