45 film projects selected for CineMart 2006 (29 January – 2 February) • Former CineMart Projects in official selection Rotterdam 2006

The 23rd CineMart has announced its selection of forty-five independent film projects. The world’s first and largest co-production market will include new productions by established art house directors such as Pablo Trapero, Guy Maddin, Alexej German jr and Li Yang. CineMart expects some 800 guests to attend, including decision making executives from all major international sales agents, buyers, film financiers and independent production companies. At least nine films in the official Rotterdam Film Festival line up are former CineMart Projects.

CineMart managing team Marit van den Elshout and Bianca Taal feel confident about a busy and very lively 23rd CineMart after selecting the best from 450 project entries: “Selecting among these entries means knowing in detail what our CineMart attendants are looking for. We introduce the most promising emerging filmmaking talent and offer continuity to filmmakers. It is obvious that many benefited from previous CineMart years: for instance nine finished projects were selected for Cannes this year. Benefiting from its strong links with the Hubert Bals Fund and Rotterdam Film Festival programme, the CineMart is able to help new talent and offer them opportunities to finance projects. The CineMart 2006 Selection includes new film projects from high profile independent film-makers like Jan Svankmajer (Czech Republic), Pablo Trapero (Argentina), Alexej German Jr. (Russia), Guy Maddin (Canada), He Jianjun (China) as well as some of the recent years most successful new talents like Bouli Lanners (Belgium, ULTRANOVA, 2005) and Nanouk Leopold (The Netherlands, GUERNSEY, 2005).

Returning Tiger Award nominated directors include: Ilya Khrzhanovsky, the much lauded director of Rotterdam 2005 festival hit “4” (Russia), EN ROUTE’s Jan Krüger (Germany), Park Chan-Ok, South Korean winner in 2003 with JEALOUSY IS MY MIDDLE NAME, MARION BRIDGE’s Wiebke von Carolsfeld (Canada), Christian Frosch (Germany, DIE TOTALE THERAPIE) and Ho Yuhang (Malaysia, SANCTUARY).

The following former CineMart Projects have been selected for the 2006 Rotterdam film festival programme: ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW by Miranda July (USA), HABANA BLUES by Benito Zambrano (Spain), JOHANNA by Kornél Mundruczó (Hungary), REGULAR LOVERS by Philippe Garrel (France), SOMETHING LIKE HAPPINESS by Bohdan Sláma (Czech Republic), THE BETRAYAL by Philippe Faucon (France), CINEMA, ASPIRINS AND VULTURES by Marcelo Gomes (Brazil) and, as world premières, FIGNER, THE END OF A SILENT CENTURY by Nathalie Alonso Casale and André van der Hout and Adri Schrover’s THE MURDER BALLADS (both from The Netherlands). Two film-makers present their new films and their new film projects: Amat Escalante (Mexico) and Vimukhti Jayasundara (Sri Lanka).

The 23rd CineMart includes new editions of the Rotterdam Lab, Passions & Promises and the Rotterdam-Berlinale Express. The Rotterdam Lab is a four day training workshop for young and emerging producers to build up their international network and their experience at an international festival and market. The Rotterdam Lab is organised in close collaboration with partner organisations. Passions & Promises is organised by European Film Promotion and the IFFR. It offers European film-making talent the opportunity to present themselves and their film in official selection. The Rotterdam-Berlinale Express is a collaboration of the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Berlinale, brings three CineMart Projects to Berlin as selections of the Berlinale’s CoProduction Market.

CineMart works as a highly efficient catalyst and matchmaker in the film-making process. During IFFR, CineMart invites a select group of co-producers, television buyers, sales agents, distributors and fund representatives to meet up with projects' representatives. Year-round, CineMart continues to actively support the selected film projects through alliances and partnerships with other international film festivals, training organizations and funding bodies.

CineMart is supported by the European Commission's MEDIA Program, the City Development Corporation (Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam, OBR), the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch Film Fund.
