SCREENING OUR PARTNER FESTIVALS AT ÉCU 2012- AVANCA AND JIFFThis year ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival has the pleasure of screening some of the best films from our partner festivals. These screenings will take place in special screening area dedicated specially for our partner festivals at Les 7 Parnassiens, 98 boulevard du Montparnasse, 75014 Paris. Anyone who have purchased a weekend, VIP or Programmers Pass to the festival or is part of the ÉCU Memeber’s Club has a free entrance to these screenings.
Avanca Film Festival from Portugal Every year, cinema enthusiasts and professionals from all over the world visit the small town of Avanca, Portugal, because the festival summons them to share their work and their talent during several days of intense discovery. The festival seeks to promote new innovative audiovisual experiences and narrative techniques, ultimately leading to technological development in the film industry. Avanca promotes several workshops lead by various cinema professionals from different countries, all the while hosting a film competition featuring quality works that are screened in different sessions over the course of the festival, and evaluated by an international jury. The aim is to assemble professionals, students and any general public interested in this form or art to bring quality cinema works to Portugal from around the world. The majority of the submissions come from Europe, yet each year the festival’s commitment to diversity presents itself through different areas of the works exhibited, ranging from the ideas, to the narrative and the design of each of the films screened. At their special screening, Avanca is playing following films:

JIFF – Jaipur International Film Festival in India Jaipur International Film Festival is the world’s fastest growing film festival, rocketing in size from just 148 films from 7 different countries on its first edition in 2009, to last year’s mammoth 600 films from 67 countries and over 15,000 visitors. The four-day mega event will showcase films in various categories such as feature, short, animation and documentary. Here filmmakers from Hollywood and Bollywood are expected to turn up for the event. Besides giving awards in different categories, JIFF will organize the world premiere of the film winning in the Best Feature category on the cable TV network. Still directed by festival founder and former documentary producer, Hanu Roj, who next year will publish his personal work in the field of poetry and novel writing along with his autobiography, the purpose of the festival is to promote “newer movie makers, exchange of knowledge, ideas and culture between India and other nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos.” With its new World’s Fabulous Red Carpet award ceremony, to be held on January 30th, the Jaipur International Film Festival, held in Rajasthan’s “pink city” of Jaipur, looks set to go from strength to strength. The special screening of Jiff films will include:

Scott Hillier, Founder and President of ÉCU - The European Independent Film Festival
Scott Hillier is a director, cinematographer, and screenwriter, based in Paris, France. In the last 20 years, Hillier has gained international recognition from his strong and incredible cinematography, editing, writing, producing and directing portfolio in both the television and film industries.
Scott began his career in the television industry in Australia. In 1988, he moved to London getting a job with the BBC who then set him to Baghdad. This opportunity led him to 10 years of traveling around world for the BBC, mainly in war zones like Somalia, Bosnia, Tchetcheynia, Kashmir, and Lebanon. After a near fatal encounter with a Russian bomber in Tchechnyia, Hillier gave up his war coverage and began in a new direction.
He moved to New York City in 1998. He directed and photographed eight one-hour documentaries for National Geographic and The Discovery Channel. Based on his war knowledge and experience, Hillier wrote and directed a short film titled, “Behind the Eyes of War!" The film was awarded “Best Short Dramatic Film” at the New York Independent Film and TV Festival in 1999. From that he served as Supervising Producer and Director for the critically acclaimed CBS 42 part reality series, "The Bravest” in 2002 and wrote and directed a stage play called, "Deadman’s Mai l," which ran at Le Théâtre du Moulin de la Galette in Paris during the summer of 2004. He then became the Director of Photography on a documentary titled, “Twin Towers." This was yet another life changing experience for Hillier. The riveting documentary won an Academy Award for "Best Documentary Short Subject" in 2003. In 2004, Hillier changed continents again, spending three months in Ethiopia. He produced “Worlds Apart,” a pilot for ABC America / True Entertainment / Endemol. As you can see, Hillier was and is always in constant movement and enjoys working in a number of diverse creative areas including documentaries, music videos, commercials, feature and short films.
Scott studied film at New York University and The London Film and Television School. He also studied literary non-fiction writing at Columbia University. Hillier's regular clients include the BBC, Microsoft, ABC, PBS and National Geographic. Between filming assignments, he used to teach film, a Masters Degree course in Screenwriting at the Eicar International Film School in Paris, France and journalism at the Formation des Journalistes Français in Paris, France.
