ÉCU-The European Independent Film Festival

ÉCU 2012 is hosting a huge number of films from all over the world and we are lucky enough to be the stage for several films making their European debut! So not only will cinemas full with ÉCU audience members be witnessing these talented works but it is just the beginning for these filmmakers and their films.

The ÉCU European Independent Film Festival does not take this responsibility lightly and is hard at work making sure this festival is going to be the best one yet. With a range of awards up for offer at the festival, it will be a great chance for filmmakers to see their films on a big stage for the first time! We are happy to be the start of the journey for these films and hope that we begin their experience the best we can here in Paris! “Rugged Wilderness and Mountain Man No More – Dropping Feathers” is a film about 5 people born with asymmetrical faces and have large deviations from what is considered to be normal and beautiful. When these people leave their homes they hide their faces behind masks, but one woman wants to make a change. This film captures the endearing nature of these people and the ability of one person to strive to make a change, refusing to let others dictate who she is.

“The Telegram Man” is a film about the long years of World War II when Australia’s small farming communities paid a terrible price. In the throes of such grief, one seldom considers the man who delivers the news. This film is touching and emphatic and a deep portrayal of human character.

“Trace of Light” is a journey into the extraordinary work and life of photographer Victoria Proebstel who spent her childhood at one of the most remote and beautiful places in the world: a lighthouse at New Zealand’s North Island. The film introduces the background and experiences of one woman and the influence it has had to make her the person she is today, set against a captivating landscape.

-          With No One in the World, Student Film (Director: Tal Haring)

“With No One in the World” features Michael, running away from the cops and bleeding to death, he walks into a local pub hoping to stay there until the heat wears off. A meeting with the pub’s depressed waitress, Maya, forces Michael to hide his injuries and past. As the night progresses and the couple open up to each other more and more, Michael’s wounds begin to grow fatal without Maya ever noticing a thing – giving us a sad tale about love, relationships and how little we know about the people around us.

“Women and Children” is a tale of a flawed man facing up to the possibility of a dead-end future and a seriously messy past. This film is a beautiful presentation of human spirit and the value of perseverance.
