Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

HANNS EISLER CONFERENCE

The Goethe-Institut in Madrid organizes in collaboration with Documenta Madrid 10 the retrospective Hanns Eisler: dialectic music for film, which will screen the works of the German musician and film composer. In this context, the Hanns Eisler Conference will be held at the Assembly hall of the Goethe-Institut next Friday 14th of May at 6:30 pm.

This special session will feature two experts in the work of Eisler: Antonio Notario Ruiz, Professor of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts in the Philosophy Department of the University of Salamanca, PhD in Philosophy and Piano Professor; and Johannes C. Gall, who also studies piano, musicology,
philosophy and Germanic philology in Stuttgart, Tubingen and Hamburg,
started and directed the
reconstruction and DVD release of Eisler’s Film Music Project for the Rockefeller Foundation (1940-1942), he is additionally the co-editor of Eisler-Studios,
the upcoming volume of which will feature the publication of his dissertation Hanns Eisler-Musik für Hollywood (Hanns Eisler – Music for Hollywood).

Hanns Eisler (1898-1962) composed a large amount of music and a
great deal of it was meant for cinema. Gifted with innate musical talent, he joined the Arnold Schönberg’s circle of composers in Vienna. Aware of the political situation bringing an end to the Weimar Republic, he moved to Berlin to build a New Music different, a dialectic music meant to serve the forsaken.

In
the circles he began moving within in Berlin
was, among others, Theodor W. Adorno and Walter Benjamin. After an initial
collaboration with
Bertolt Brecht and Walter Rutmann, he started composing music for documentary film. He worked with the directors Joris Ivens, Joseph Losey, David Wolff, Robert Strebbins, Lionel Berman, Herbert Kline, John Ferno o Alain Resnais. His political involvement drove him to exile when national-socialism took power in Germany. That exile included a brief stay in Madrid, during which he collaborated with the International Brigade.

The Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with Documenta Madrid and the Internationale Hanns Eisler Gesellschaft, rescues the documentary work on which he left his mark over the course of four decades. The retrospective Hanns Eisler: Music dialectic to the cinema will be screened between 7th and 14th  of May in Filmoteca Española. For the first time, we will be able to see films that one used to have to search and search for, and others that could not be seen until now. Many years later, Eisler returns to Madrid. This cycle could be made with the help of the DEFA Foundation and the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv
[Archive broadcasting from Germany].
