Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

End on a high note

The last day has arrived with 5 films to catch! As The White Meadows won the best film and it was showing on the last day, it was definitely on my schedule. This white, salty landscape of Iran looks like a lunar landscape, but it actually exists and the performance seem so real. I would not have voted the film as the best, but it has its merits. My day kicked off with the doccie, Game of Death, which shows how powerful TV has become. I felt a little cheated as I put myself in the shoes of the contestants who thought they were torturing somebody by administering electric shocks while they were the ones getting tortured! Letters from Teddy is a wonderful look at colonialism in Aden in the 50s and 60s, filled with lots of humour. I loved Sebbe, the Swedish film about a son and his mother who are both under serious pressure. The day and the festival closed with Casey Affleck's tour de force, The killer inside me. I predict that he will be bigger than brother Ben as this is a top thriller and my second 10 of the festival.  As all good things come to an end, the 31st DIFF came to an end and I'm already counting down the days for the 32nd one in July 2011. I've met wonderful people who run and organise a festival of this stature, film fans who walk around with their guides and who run from screening to screening just like me and I love Durban as this city embraces its jewel in the sun.

Till next year.
