Clones Film Club launches ‘Courthouse Classics’ with ‘Twelve Angry
Men’
In
these recessionary times a day in court might seem like an unlikely
prescription to beat the blues and forget our financial woes: After all it is not
often that court can promise entertainment, good conversation and tasty
nibbles, and a glass of wine. However, that is exactly what is on offer at
8.30pm on Friday April 24th in Clones, where the newly refurbished
courthouse building provides the stunning venue for a screening from Clones Film Club.
Appropriately
enough, given the setting, the movie to be shown on the evening is the 1957
courtroom drama “Twelve Angry Men”. This cult classic stars Henry Fonda as the
sceptical juror number 8, in a murder trial where the accused faces the
automatic death penalty if found guilty. The drama unfolds into a complex study
of the prejudices personalities and interactions of the jury, as they grapple with the possibly that the case is not as open
and shut as it appears.
While the movie may be familiar to many
through late night TV screenings this is a rare opportunity to see the film on
the big screen in a beautiful community setting, and to enjoy a drink and a
chat with film-loving locals.
The
venue is made available through the generous support of Monaghan County
Council, and the event has been organised in conjunction with Clones Film
Festival. Significant local interest has been expressed in this free screening
and a large turnout is expected. “It’s clear” said Thomas Zechner of Clones
Film Festival “that Clones people have a great interest in cinema, and we
anticipate a full house for this film.”
Clones Film Club will run regular screenings throughout the year, offering
locals the chance to experience real cinema in their own hometown. “We think”
added Zechner with a grin “that Clones
Film Club will be making regular court appearances from now on”. It is likely
that this will be the case, and the Film Club will become another staple of the
ever-expanding Clones entertainment scene.

Screening
will be preceded by wine and nibbles reception. Admission is free of charge.
