Malick Returns

In 2011, director Terrence Malick appeared at the Cannes Film Festival with his his film “The Tree of Life” which won the Palme d’Or. This year, Malick returned with his film “A Hidden Life,” a film about World War II. Between these two films, Malick has been critiqued for his films having strayed from his usual path, but with this year’s competitive film he vowed to return to his usual ways. This film was one of the few in particular that critics and fans alike highly anticipated viewing at this year’s festival, and in addition is one of the top contenders in the running for the Palme d’Or. There were high hopes for this film after Malick’s recent works fell short of the bar he had set for himself in the more distant pass, and with the premiere they were met as the film has been considered to be relevant, touching, and as insightful as his previous works. After 8 years, Malick has made a strong return here in Cannes.
