MASAAN, AMY and more
A number of Indian films -- and IFFLA alumni -- made a strong impression this year at the recently wrapped Cannes Film Festival. Neeraj Ghaywan's MASAAN, a gritty drama shot in Benaras by Avinash Arun and starring Shweta Tripathi, bowed in the Un Certain Regard section. It won the FIPRESCI Prize, as well as the Prix de l'Avenir.
Check out our IFFLA interviews with Tripathi, who starred in IFFLA 2015's Opening Night Gala HARAAMKHOR and won this year's Best Actress award; and Ghaywan, who attended the festival in 2012 with SHOR.
Also in Un Certain Regard was THE FOURTH DIRECTION (CHAUTI KOOT), by Gurvinder Singh, a tale of state-sponsored crime in Punjab in the late 1980s and the subsequent resistance movement.
Asif Kapadia's documentary on the late Amy Winehouse, AMY, received positive reviews, as well as a nomination for the festival's Queer Palm. It will be released stateside in July.

A.R. Rahman Concert

Killa Release in India
Mark your calendars! IFFLA 2015 official selection KILLA is slated for theatrical release in India on June 26. Centered on a young boy and his mother who relocate from Pune to the coastal countryside of Konkan, the film is the feature debut of cinematographer Avinash Arun (who shot MASAAN, which recently bowed at Cannes).
