German Film Music Day in Cannes 2014

67th Festival de Cannes Saturday, May 17, 2014, 12.00am – 7.00pm - Plage Goéland, Boulevard de la Croisette, Cannes

With Beckmann, the composer of the film music of F*CK JU GÖHTE which has been one of the most successful German films in recent years, Matthias Weber – LOLA winner for best film music 2014 (DAS FINSTERE TAL), Academy Award winner Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (original music for FINDING NEVERLAND · UNFAITHFUL), Danish director Lone Scherfig (AN EDUCATION · ITALIENISCH FÜR ANFÄNGER ) and the composer Jean-Michel Bernard (BE KIND REWIND · SCIENCE OF SLEEP) the German Film Music Day 2014 will once again present film music from Germany in an international context.

With the German Film Music Day the leading German industry forum SoundTrack_Cologne together with ECSA European Composer and Songwriter Alliance and FERA Federation of European Film Directors as well as the German composer unions Composers Club, DEFKOM/DKV and mediamusic, provides an international platform for presenting German film music.

A twelve-point program will present German composers and the German film music scene; a panel in cooperation with the Austrian Composers’ Society (ÖKB) will explore Austrian music in films and the media.

Music from German-speaking composers influenced the development of film music. And still today, film music is constantly being renewed and enriched by impulses from Germany. The German Film Music Day at the Festival de Cannes focuses attention on film music as one of the most important creative elements in cinema, be it in the German-speaking world or internationally. At the same time, the German Film Music Day serves as base camp and meeting-point for the German and European film music scene in Cannes”, says organizer Michael P. Aust of SoundTrack_Cologne.

A keynote by Berlin-based Polish film music composer and Academy Award winner Jan A. P. Kaczmarek will open the German Film Music Day 2014. Jean-Michel Bernard, who became known as a composer of Michel Gondry, together with director Lone Scherfig and her composer Kasper Winding will then shed light on the status quo of the cooperation between direction and film composer.

German smash hit, arthouse film production and international co-production: How varied the requirements are for film music depending on genre, target group and production environment will become clear in three case studies with composers Beckmann (F*CK JU GÖHTE · comedy), Oliver Heuss (SI-O-SE POL · drama in a migrant’s milieu) as well as Ralf Wengenmayr and music supervisor Milena Fressmann (LOVE, ROSIE · literary adaption).

This year again, the LOLA winner for best film music will be present: Matthias Weber, LOLA winner for best film music 2014 (DAS FINSTERE TAL), will join the German Film Music Day live from Los Angeles via Skype.

With the presentation of the winner of the Vienna Film Music Prize as well as the winners of the Austrian Film Prize in the categories Best Music/Best Direction/Best Film Judit Varga (composer) and Hüseyin Tabak (director), Alexander Kukelka (composer, president of ÖKB) and Prof. Peter Janda (composer, producer, board member AKM) will provide an insight into the Austrian film music scene.

SoundTrack_Cologne presents the German Film Music Day in cooperation with the German composer unions DEFKOM/DKV, Composers Club and mediamusic, ÖKB Österreichischer Komponistenbund, ECSA European Composer & Songwriter Alliance, FERA Federation of European Film Directors and BR filmtonart.
