In a dramatic saga of family, love, science and music, a creative 14 year-old cello player, Aleksandrya 'Aleks' Landis, competing for the Gold Pin award and a guest student chair in a symphony, faces obstacles from an oppressive teacher, more competent string players, and her own skeptical family. 

 

On a cold winter day Aleks struggles to get to rehearsal on time at a crosstown Chicago conservatory. She misses a bus and taxi, and while forced to wait for a commuter train, plays a guitar duet with a street musician. Aleks arrives late to class, but offers to stay late and make up the time. Her cello instructor, a former famous maestro, rather than sympathizing with her efforts, berates her and bars her from the class. Aleks feels destroyed by the rejection and public embarrassment. On her way home, before her impending confrontation with her parents, Aleks has an innocent romantic encounter with a classmate, Andreas. 

 

On the day of the big audition, with a panel of serious, high grade judges present, Aleks is hardly on anyone's list to win the Gold Pin. Yet what happens that day-and in the following days-will long be etched in the minds of everyone involved.
