Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

A Risky Business

Animation is a risky business, a company will spend 4-5 years on a film and if it doesn't have the Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks logo, it normally fails in box office. So it may be even riskier to spend money to display these films in the Cannes Film Festival, with many being advertised throughout the market and in apartments and offices*. There may be cause for alarm as many animated movies start to fight for the market of family friendly.

This field of film will always be looking for movies to entertain parents and children alike, but is it possible for the market to get exhausted by so many movies trying to appeal to them? Not to mention the stress it puts on movies trying to make animated movies that require a lot of time to make as well as a lot of money, money that isn’t guaranteed when distributed. Also, they don’t have the expenses to advertise and reach other countries as much as the big brand-named companies can, because to them, global distribution, and notoriety.

This all leads to buyers becoming hesitant to buy these movies, yet they still arrive at Cannes. Two coming from sale groups Stuart Ford’s AGC Intl. and Sebastion Raybaud’s Anton “Missing Link” and “Fire Heart”, respectively*. Another creater, Constantine, behind the “Resident Evil” series will be supporting their animated movie, Dragon Rider**.

Still, businesses are looking for the films that will give them the most money and movies that offer a family friendly outing is a genre that can deliver on these. This can be the case because going to see a movie is still a popular family activity.  Evidence shows this as movies like Ballerina earned 110 million dollars over seas in 2017, though this isn’t the case for many to appear in countries like America.

Animation movies at Cannes may be at a turning point

The description for Missing Link

In the story Missing Link “The charismatic Sir Lionel Frost (voiced by Hugh Jackman) considers himself to be the world's foremost investigator of myths and monsters. The trouble is none of his small-minded high-society peers seems to recognize this. Sir Lionel's last chance for acceptance by the adventuring elite rests on traveling to America's Pacific Northwest to prove the existence of a legendary creature. A living remnant of Man's primitive ancestry. The Missing Link.” Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures will be backing it and it will open in the U.S.

The description for Dragon Rider

the story follows Firedrake, a young silver dragon; Sorrel, a mountain spirit; and Ben, an orphaned boy. The unlikely band searches in the Himalayas for the Rim of Heaven, which can offer sanctuary for Firedrake’s kin, whose valley is made uninhabitable by a dam.
