A Look at the 2012 Tony Awards from a Film Blogger/Seatfiller's Perspective

user
There's always some glitter of Tinseltown on Broadway; however, the 66th Annual American Theater Wing's Tony Awards had a really important film tie-in. You probably think I'm referring to: The win for Death of a Salesman produced by Scott Rudin, directed by Mike Nichols, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Andrew Garfield, who brought along current girlfriend and Spiderman (2012 movie) co-star Emma Stone. Or Once, totally sweeping the Tonys as a Broadway musical! Which firs...

Tribute To Jacques Tati at Belgrade’s Author Film Festival

user
Belgrade’s Author Film Festival hosted Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon and gave a couple of screenings of The Fairy (La Fee) to a festival audience, including the screening of their previous film Rumba. The actually amazing Belgian based filmmaking trio Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy are back with their second (actually third) old school approach film The Fairy (La Fee). Even if the film is firmly grounded in dedication to the artwork of Keaton or Charlie Chaplin, authors here g...

The Pipe at RIFF 2011

THE PIPE! When director Risteard O'Domhnaill (aka Richie O'Donnell) accepted his award for the RIFF ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD in Reykjavik on October 01, 2011, Richie stood up confidently in front of hundreds thanking the RIFF jury and voters for his 'puffin statue of aluminum'. He had the whole crowd in stitches with his witty humor and singsong/rolling Irish accent. The film has held a successful run as yet, festival hopping for over a year now with a sweet final triumph at RIFF. While Richie is a g...

Solex Ahoy

Director: Elisabeth Esselink.
Solex Ahoy The Sound Map of the Netherlands During the course of the summer of 2008, Bart van Poppel and Elisabeth Esselink trekked the numerous rivers, lakes and waterways covering the twelve provinces of the Netherlands by an old motor boat. In each province a different cast of musicians were invited to climb aboard and purely a l'improviste, create a homage to the Dutch landscape. On returning to her home base in Amsterdam, Esselink took the resulting material full of noises, moods, voices and rhythms back to her studio where she set about processing the recordings into twelve separate sound-image compositions, one for each province. Solex Ahoy, or better still, The Sound Map of the Netherlands is a reflection of the perilous route. A homage to the Dutch waterways.

Through seven bottles of cursed wine, we follow the journey of Valentina, a beautiful artist living in Berlin. She concedes to her mother's ultimatum, and pursues a heterosexual relationship to appease her, only to catch her new boyfriend in bed with another man. Her inability to cope with her life triggers her repressed male alter-ego to emerge and take over…

The Global Film Village: Julie and THE ROYAL FAMILY

user
by Marla LewinFriday night I saw The Royal Family on Broadway. It was all one would imagine of a grand old dynasty, like the Barrymores.  A family with an entourage, men falling in love with their own images, women unable to embrace love for fear of missing an opportunity for a good part. Shakespeare said “all the world is a stage”, and still today everyone likes to take a peek at the lives of those who actually get paid to act. The play is about the drama the characters create in their o...
