Jazz
As the 65th Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27, 2012) approaches I am reminded of one of my all time favorite Palme d’Or winners, the French/Italian/Brazilian production of BLACK ORPHEUS (Orfeu Negro; 1959).
Directed by French director Marcel Camus, the film received worldwide critical acclaim. At home in Brazil, however, it received much criticism due to its cliché portrayal of Rio favela life; as if every day in such desperate poverty is solely a celebration of love and life. ...

Jazz is one of the only art forms that originated in America, although it can be argued that its influences and popularity are great overseas than in the country of its origin. For years, jazz artists who were treated poorly in their own country (spurned by the recording industry’s mainstream and and physically prevented from enjoying their success by the draconian Jim Crow laws that limited where they could eat, sleep and recreate), found creative and inspirational sola...
4 DAYS OF BRAZILIAN MULTICULTURALISM For more than 500 years, Brazil has been melting cultures, skin colours, races, traditions, tastes, flavours, histories and everything else into a very large and welcoming pot, and this year the hottest film festival in Toronto will bring this diversity to the Royal Theatre, at the heart of the vibrant and artistic Portuguese/Italian community in the central-west side of the city. Brazil and Canada have more in common than you can imagine. They are both relatively young nations where immigration played, and still plays! -- a very important role. Did you know that Brazil has the highest population of people of African descent outside the African continent? As with the Japanese community established there; it?s the biggest outside Japan. And there was also a time when there were more people speaking Italian on the streets of São Paulo than Portuguese, the official Brazilian language. Everywhere in Toronto, you can feel, see, hear and taste this same multicultural atmosphere. You can sit in a Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of the Caribbean area, reading a European newspaper and overhearing conversations in three or four different languages at the same time, while the radio plays songs from the Middle East... And this is why we decided to have Multiculturalism as our theme for this year, in our screenings as well as the business networking we promote during the festival. So come and celebrate with us the great and diverse Brazilian new wave of cinema. It's our third year and we will love to have you with us!

This year's Festival celebrates 50 years of Bossa Nova, the famous musical style that traveled the world with tunes such as "The Girl from Ipanema". In 1989, Tom, (Antônio Carlos Jobim's nickname), explains: "In Portuguese, a bossa means a 'boss', a protuberance, a hump, a bump. Like you have the bossa of Notre Dame. And the human brain has these protuberances, these bumps in the head. These convexities correspond to the concavities of gray matter in the brain. So, if a guy has something, it is...

THESSALONIKI FORTY-EIGHT THE GRAND OPENING WITH BALLOONS ON HIGH. By Alex Deleon for www.filmfestivals.com Barely recovered from the road fatigue suffered on an arduous 26 hour bus trip through six intervening countries down from Poland, 2000 Km. north of here and -- Whiz-Bang -- we're already three days into the festival. Friday, opening night, was a mighty gala with good vibes inside and outside of the stately cavernous OLYMPION theater, in spite of a heavy sprinkle from the skies above Πλ...
When I came around the corner at lunch today and saw the Transformers trucks parked around the fountain, I literally felt like I was seeing Madonna, Elvis, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe!! LOL I went back and got my camera! I also took some video which will be uploaded soon. I am so amazed how they could make this big, blockbuster movie with out of this world effects (and I mean OUT OF THIS WORLD) and still create CHARACTERS that I developed strong feelings for! I mean, I feel like I *...
Reactions came straight from the heart Thursday afternoon after the second showing of Wong Kar Wai's film, "My Blueberry Nights." Viewers were not only willing but even anxious to talk about their reactions after watching the 151 minute film, the third film of Wong's to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival . One already established Wong Kar Wai fan was obviously affected. " It's Wong Kar Wai and his stuff is always beautiful. Everything is beautiful."...
Norah Jones, Wong Kar Wai, and Jude Law laugh as they discuss the making of My Blueberry Nights and reminisce about the shooting of "the kiss."
