THE MAIDEN DANCED TO DEATH (2011) at Fantasporto!

user
Hungarian cinema comes to Porto during Fantasporto 2012 in Endre Hules' film, THE MAIDEN DANCED TO DEATH (2011). The film is about two brothers during Communist Hungary who were great dancers and once upon a time danced together. But while one brother kept dancing, the other gave it up. Now they meet twenty years later to dance together again. I interviewed Endre Hules a year ago before the film was finished. And now here in Fantasporto I will finally s...

Moleman – The Truth Lies Down Under

Director: Szilárd Matusik, Gábor Csépai.
Moleman is a documentary diary about the independent subcultures of a bustling Central European capital, Budapest. Under the cultural surface of the metropolis lies a flourishing art life, and alternative recreational activities are available. There are many who do not follow the mainstream taste, and do not fall for the temptation of the commercial media. The originators of Budapest’s subcultures and their audience represent hundreds of thousands of people. These subcultures and artists should not be underrated or disregarded. Moleman chooses five characters from this world, and allows us to peek through their eyes into a culture and lifestyle that lie out of the realm of celebrities, that is other than Pop Idol or the soap opera „Between Friends” or the pop band Hooligans. But it exists, creates works and is taking shape.

4Oth Hungarian Film Week Set to Open

user
The 4Oth Hungarian Film Revue (Magyar Filmszemle) will open as usual at the Congress Center Hall in Budapest on Tuesday evening, January 27, 2OO9. What is a bit unusual is that the festival organizers have reserved the hall for the entire five days of the run and have generally given the festival a bit of a facelift and a slight geographic moveover. The Congress Center with its extensive guest facilities has usually served as an opening night venue only. This year, however, says Elisabeth Tót...

Hungarians in Hollywood – A Claim to Fame

user
Los Angeles – The 8th Hungarian Film Festival of Los Angeles, running 15-23 October 2008, has officially opened its doors tonight at Wilshire Boulevard’s Fine Arts Theater. Presented by Bunyik Entertainment, this one-week showcase of Hungarian films is the newest shining star on the skies of the 2008 Hollywood film scene. As Sir Alexander Korda once said, “It is not enough to be Hungarian; you must have talent as well”. Well, concerning the film industry, Hungarians sure have some talent...

Eszter Nagy-Kálózy,scintillating Eszter as Magyar film week winds down

user
Eszter Nagy-Kálózy, 42, one of Hungary's outstanding screen actresses, was particularly brilliant in "Eszter's Inheritance" (Eszter hagyatéka), the showcase off-competition film of the festival week, in a classic period piece set entirely in a country estate by Lake Boloton in the 193Os. The film is directed by Józef Sipos and is based on a pre-war short story by legendary ex-patriate XXth century Hungarian writer, Sándor Márai. This is basically a woman's story, a tale of frustrated lif...

Hungarian Film on the Rise...

user
By Anita Falusi My father called me a few months ago to tell me “the big news,” the new Hungarian Studios are looking for talented and skilled film professionals. This is my time to leave the western world behind and finally go back home. Ten years ago, when I left Budapest, the only way someone could work in the film industry if they received their diploma from the College for Cinematic and Theater Arts or they had relatives in the field. The College accepted 16 people every three years fo...

Hungarian films highlights of 2006

user
SZABO FLAP FLUSTERS FIRST-NIGHTERS IN BUDAPEST AT MAGYAR FILMSZEMLE February 6, 2006 The opening night of the Hungarian film week at the Budapest Congress Centre turned out to be more of a political than a cinematic event. "Rokonok" (Relatives), the eagerly awaited new film by Hungary's leading filmmaker, Istvan Szabo -- his first Hungarian language film since 1992 -- was scheduled to open the festivities, but just a few days prior to the opening an article appeared in a prestigious literary mag...

Magyar film revue: from the ridiculous to the sublime

user
New Hungarian features on view here range from the utterly ridiculous to the utterly sublime. At the ridiculous extreme is "TAXIDERMIA" by "Hukkle" director Pálfi György, while on the sublime side of the spectrum is the ethereally sensuous "The Bird Saviour, Clouds and Wind", by first time director István "Taikyo" Szaladják."Taxidermia" doesn't have much to do with the art of taxidermy (although a taxidermist does make a brief appearance toward the end), but everything to do with force feedi...

Budapest Fest sets record in spite of bomb scare

user
BUDAPEST FEST SETS RECORD IN SPITE OF BOMB SCAREby Alex Deleon, BudapestFebruary 12, 2OO6With ticket sales now counted and statistics compiled, it turns out that the 37th Hungarian Film Review (Magyar Film Szemle) in Budapest set a new paid attendance record in spite of the fact that an entire evening of screenings had to be canceled because of a bomb threat. The phoned in threat turned out to be a false alarm, probably the act of a twisted mind rather than a Moslem terrorist cell, however, with...

Hungarian Film Week to show Szabo's latest film

user
The 37th Annual Hungarian Film Week, or "Magyar Filmszemle" (Film Survey) as it is officially known, opens the curtain on February 1st and will continue for five days thereafter, during which an overview of the entire preceding year's film production -- both features and shorts -- will be presented. There are actually very few such exclusively national festivals (most of them in former Communist bloc countries) showing the entire film production each year of a relatively small country at one fa...
