Scorsese made a name for himself with his violent depictions of American culture and one only must look at his repertoire of films to see how this might be the case. He is fascinated with capturing the gritty reality of life, which is why he seems to have a penchant for creating gangster films. There are over 20 films that have been directed by Scorsese, and each of them have been released to critical acclaim, some albeit, more than others. Those who are new to his works might want to get a taste of what Scorsese is about, so here are some of his best films.
Goodfellas
It is hard to think of a film that can top the epic Godfather, but Scorsese’s Goodfellas certainly comes close. Many people might remember this movie for its ultraviolent effects or Joe Pesci’s superb acting in the role of the typical ‘angry man’, but Goodfellas should be remembered for more than just this. The film tells the story of an aspiring mobster who has a twisted ideal of the American Dream, and chronicles how he slowly become disillusioned with that ideal when he gets more than he bargained for. This film is considered by most to be Scorsese’s best.
Casino
This is a film that arrived after Goodfellas became a massive box office hit, so it was naturally compared to that film. It featured a similar epic gangster story and even had some of the same actors, but it is different in that its ending is arguably better. The story revolves around the dealings of a mobster in Las Vegas – a haven for gambling. The Wolf of Wall Street
In 2013, Scorsese proved that he still has it when he came out with this raving success. It tells the true story of a self-made man, Jordan Belfort, and how he made his success by conning innocent people. The film shows how power and wealth can corrupt and make even the most upstanding people morally indecent. However, by the end of the film, Belfort gets his just desserts.
