The Movies that Matter Festival is the annual film festival on human rights and social justice in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice. This film and debate festival is the successor of the Amnesty International Film Festival. It features the best of recent filmmaking related to human rights and human dignity and serves as a platform for debate and discussion.
The next edition of the Movies that Matter Festival takes place 20th - 26th of March, 2014. We would like to welcome you to submit your film(s) for the two main sections: A Matter of ACT and Camera Justitia. The final submission deadline is 15th of October, 2013.
Therefore, Movies that Matter welcomes documentaries about human rights defenders and fictions or documentaries about international law and justice made after 2012. Activists and directors of the selected films in these competitions will be invited as guests for the festival.
The festivals presents six awards with a total amount of money price of € 20.000 among others:
GOLDEN BUTTERFLY - Human Rights Award € 5.000
GOLDEN BUTTERFLY –Best Film in the A Matter of ACT competition € 4.000
SILVER BUTTERFLY - Camera Justitia Award for best film on law and justice € 5.000
Movies that Matter Foundation
Movies that Matter is a foundation established in Amsterdam in 2006 - springing from the Film Festival Department of Amnesty International in The Netherlands. Movies that Matter believes that films, by capturing social responsibility, can engage viewers in a dialogue about human rights and the threats to human dignity.
Movies that Matter is the home base for various activities. Besides the Movies that Matter Festival it realises a human rights programme at IDFA, educational programmes and monthly human rights film and debate programmes in a network of 15 Dutch theatres. Committed to the support and promotion of human rights film screenings worldwide, Movies that Matter offers an extra stimulus to the wider circulation of human rights films in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
