Smarthouse Films is an Amsterdam-based feature film and documentary production company working with authentic, fresh and challenging stories that have commercial and universal potential.
Founder Danielle Guirguis has worked on many award winning productions including Paul Verhoeven’s ‘Black Book’, ‘Stricken’ by Reinout Oerlemans and ‘The Happy Housewife’ by Antoinette Beumer as well as many others which have been selected at film festivals around the world.
Smarthouse is currently working on the adaptation of the classic Dutch book ‘A van Abeltje’ by the most famous Dutch author of children books Annie M.G. Schmidt (adaptation by Robert Wolfe) and the romantic dramady ‘HASH BABY’ based upon the true story of a naïve young student who accidentally ended up as the biggest Hash Baroness of Amsterdam (to be written and directed by Michiel van Jaarsveld.) The adaptation of the book ‘Satan’s Sonata’ by Alex van Galen will be an English language project and written and directed by Alejandro Agresti. Both ‘HASH BABY’ and ‘Satan’s Sonata’ are in coproduction with CTM Films.
Smarthouse is proud to announce that its short film ‘Undertow’ directed by Diede In’t Veld and written by Daan Gielis, was shown in JT Bioscopen and UPC On Demand and will distributed by Benelux Film Distributors from August 2011
Film synopsis:
More than anything else in the world, thirty-eight year old Maud wants a child of her own. It is such an overwhelmingly strong feeling that it takes over every aspect of her existence. To get her life back into perspective and to help her confront her grief, she forces herself to watch happy families picking up their kids from school. On her way home she feels a little better and starts flirting with a man on a bicycle who is waiting at the other side of an open canal bridge.
