A retrospective of Wim Wenders

2nd. Malatya International Film Festival will be held from 18th to 24th November 2011.  With the support of the Malatya Apricot Research, Development and Promotion Foundation and Malatya Governorship, festival is led by Malatya Governor Ulvi Saran and organized by World Mass Media Research Foundation.  The Festival will be bringing the best Wim Wenders films to the festival goers in Malatya this year.  One of the most important representatives of the ‘New German Cinema’, Wim Wenders is known with his films reflecting 1968’s ideas of freedom, new way of life and his passion for social criticism. Wenders won the ‘Palme d'Or’ at Cannes in 1984 with his enduring film ‘PARIS, TEXAS’ and the ‘Best Director’ Award in 1987 at Cannes with his film ‘WINGS OF DESIRE’ (Der Himmel über Berlin). Wenders’s latest 3D musical film about the life of Pina Bausch – An influencial leading artist in the world of modern dance - also competed at Cannes Film Festival this year. Wim Wenders is a consultant at the World Cinema Foundation which is formed to protect and restore films.   The films to be screened in Malatya under the title of ‘Wim Wenders in the Course of Time’  are;  DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN / WINGS OF DESIRE, West Germany, France 1987, 128’ The sky over Wenders’ war-scarred Berlin is full of angels who listen to the tortured thoughts of mortals and try to comfort them. These are not ordinary angels we used to know. Unseen and unheard by the other people, these are two ordinary men wearing trench coats and observing and listening to the diverse thoughts of Berliners. Only kids and other angels could see them. The film is set at the ends of 1980s, where Germany (and Berlin) is still divided as East and West. Stranded in the outer reaches of Portugal, the director does not even have any film in his camera. There's nothing left to do but scare up a potential backer -- preferably one of those rich, movie-mad Americans. PARIS, TEXAS, West Germany, France, UK, USA 1984, 148’This unusual road movie, with screenplay by acclaimed playwright Sam Shepard, tells the tale of Travis, a man lost in his own private hell. This revolutionary 3D film “Pina” from director Wim Wenders captures the aesthetic of Pina Bausch’s greatest works in a thrilling way. IM LAUF DER ZEIT / KINGS OF THE ROAD, West Germany 1976, 175’“Kings of the Road”, focuses on the relationship that develops between two men - movie projector repairman Bruno and suicidal Robert - as they travel in a truck on the dusty roads along the border between East and West Germany. Lonely and introspective, they both long for the company of women.
